Okay...seems on another board I've read today there's still a certain amount of aggravation over the Colonel Reb mascot, or lack thereof I might should say.
Many folks don't get that Ole Miss still owns the rights to the image (as well as the sales of said image) of Col. Reb. I don't ever see it going away. But what was taken away in 2003 was the big fuzzy-headed figure that roamed the sidelines.
If you remember they had a contest for new images to represent a new, more athletic and intimidating Col. Reb, both finalists being very embarassing. Others were submitted that were far better but were never considered officially. One of them is the logo used at rebelsports.net.
Now you've got sites like saveolemiss.com still pushing for the return of the old Col. Reb (which will not happen, by the way), and of course that causes a backlash amongst those on some boards who are all PC (some to the point you want to throw up on them) or are too ignorant to realize we do need a mascot.
That said, look at these attached images of FSU's Renegade and Texas Tech's Masked Rider. Boise State also has a masked rider. So I ask, couldn't we have an image of similar nature (see third attachment as an example0, maybe like a Southern Gentleman with an attitude, almost like a Wild West gunslinger or a Southern count?
Looking forward to other Rebels' opinions as well as those of anyone not an Ole Miss supporter but who might have something positive to add.
BTW, anyone know that the "Colonel Reb" in the early 70's was a black dude? Hell, I remember scanning the stands and seeing people waving the confederate flag......both black AND white.
The big fuzzy-headed figure that roamed the sidelines was never there during my whole career as a student at Ole Miss. He came much later so his disappearance isn't as big an issue with me as it is with some fans.
Colonel Rebel has always been our mascot and will always be our mascot as far as I'm concerned.

Gentlemen, I hear you. And in my heart I agree with you. And those are the exact images to which I referred early in my message. That image is owned by Ole Miss and I believe will never go away.
And Kevin, you're right. That image is also based upon the image of Blind Jim Ivy, the black man to whom you reference. It was actually decades before the '70's though.
But I'm sorry, the two of you and I both know that image is not going to roam our sidelines.
We will always have this Colonel that we all know and love, but I'm talking about a newer, refreshed mascot that can appeal to the fans like a cheerleader during games. That's what I'm asking for opinions on.
Yeah, I'll positively become a fan of another school if those dumb*** members of Generation Useless vote in a f'n science fiction character. I'm an Ole Miss Rebel, not a member of some dumb*** "Ole Miss Rebel Alliance".
Quote:"As a student at olemiss, this is totally real. There's a big push to get Admiral Ackbar to be our new mascot and no longer simply be the "rebels" but the "Ole miss Rebel Alliance" The creator of Admiral Ackbar has already been emailed and he feels that we stand a good chance of getting the approval of Lucas Arts. Go to Hoth LSU!

Well...I'm a big Star Wars fan. An even bigger Ole Miss fan. But even I don't necessarily want to see the two worlds collide.

Are we still going to be the Rebels? One of my old high schools, Forest Hill in Jackson, used to be the Forest Hill Rebels. Now they're the Patriots because of all this politically correct BS.

According to all officials involved, the names "Ole Miss" and "Rebels" aren't going anywhere.

That's how the progression occurs. First the confederate flag is banned. Then the playing of Dixie is banned. Now Colonel Reb is banned. You honestly think "Rebel" is going to stay?
Let's just say I'm not overly optimistic. This is how the leftists and politically correct morons get it done.
