RE: TV Ratings for Big East Bowl Games
The Gator Bowl overestimated the interest in Bobby Bowden's last game just like I knew they would. At the end of the day FSU was just an average 6-6 (well now 7-6) team.

The Liberty Bowl rating was 2.7 last year, and should do at least as well this year, plus consecutive sellouts.

I guess it's a good thing for WVU that not as many people as feared saw that Gator fiasco ...

The Capital One is always a better matchup than the Gator anyway.

RE: TV Ratings for Big East Bowl Games
I'll be really interested to see what the ratings were for the Fiesta Bowl. I'd really wouldn't be surprised about anything - they easily could be the worst BCS ratings on record or there might be good numbers for the novelty of the 2 non-BCS schools playing each other.

If you want to know why the Rose Bowl/Big Ten/Pac-10 continues to wield so much power, even if you don't like it, the Rose Bowl scored a 13.1 featuring a #8 vs. #9 matchup. The Florida/Cincinnati Sugar Bowl later that day got a respectable 8.5 (which was slightly higher than last year's Alabama/Utah Sugar Bowl and significantly higher than last year's Cincy/VT Orange Bowl.

I had thought the reason the Rose Bowl has done so well is because they still haven't had a non-BCS or BE school YET to play there as all the other BCS bowls are affected by a BE or non-BCS school.

However, even when there is a BCS-BCS matchup, they still don't get the same ratings at the Rose.

Since the expansion of the BCS bowls to 5 games, the only bowl that has come close is the Ohio STate-Texas matchup in the Fiesta (10.40) versus the USC-PSU (11.70). Even the USC versus Illinois did a lot better than the other bowls. Why?

The Rose Bowl is played at the perfect time: 4:30 on New Year's Day. It's unopposed and it's the Granddaddy Of Them All.

That's exact the reason, not because B10 or P10 has any super drawing power. Put another two good teams in the same time slot with no oppositions, they will get similar ratings. Some people like to think Rose Bowl get good ratings because of B10 and Pac-10, it is just not the case. They locked a prime TV time slot up and that's the major reason.

Much better than most other Big East bowls (as well as closer). One would think such a successful, tradition-rich bowl would be highly attractive to the Big East. On the other hand, that is the conference which once turned down Penn State.

Its obvious that the conference that turned down Penn State doesnt want Memphis either. If thats what it takes for the BE to get the Liberty, then it seems that the BE has said no thanks. I dont think that the conference will ever grow to regret it the way they regret not inviting Penn State.

But then again, this thread was about BE Bowl ratings, not cusa bowl ratings. So please refrain from pimping Memphis every chance you get. Now move along.

Every BCS bowl is unopposed in its time slot. In fact, the Rose Bowl is the only BCS bowl that's NOT in prime time (which is when the greatest number of TV viewers is available).

The numbers for the Sugar Bowl were very good 8.5 rating and 15 share. Up 9% from Utah Alabama a year ago and up 57 percent from last years Orange Bowl. The best news for Cincy is that we now have out traveled two very well known top ten type teams two years in a row. This year is was by a landslide. UC now knows it came take 20 to 30k to a good bowl on a good date. How many days until Kick-off?

I would say Jan 1st in the middle of afternoon or close to dinner time on the east coast where all the families get together is more "prime" time than many other slots. There is a reason why so many bowls want to play on Jan 1st. It is one single day where families are home after a night of partying. It is also why all the stores are closed as well. If you put TCU/Boise or Cincy/FLA in the same Rose Bowl slot this year, I have NO DOUBT it would draw similar or better numbers.

I was with a couple of friends who could careless about OSU or Oregon, but we were watching the game cause it was the only one on.

Yes and No. No, because there's no law that says the RB gets that slot all to its itself. The time-slot is "locked up" because every other bowl/network knows that the Rose will draw the most, so no one wants to commit ratings suicide by scheduling at the same time.

But yes, the "Rose Bowl" is a brand name that resonates with sports fans on its own terms. The Rose could host Texas vs. Alabama and would draw just as well as it does with P10/B10 teams.

Just to cut KnightLight off at the pass, I am sure that the International Bowl had terrible ratings. That way it doesn't look like we're "hiding" anything...
