My opinion is the only way any bowl would work in Louisville is if the Big 10 was one of the participants.

If the new stadium was capped the Yankee bowl could do quite well, but without it, i just don't see it as a premiere destination. The problem is, where down south is there still availability to move it? A destination city with a descent stadium, that doesn't already have a bowl game.

Umm... do you really consider Indianapolis a destination city? Minneapolis would be a better choice, but it's not a destination, either.

Also...if a Bowl Game was ever played in Louisville...it would have to be a Noon or 1 pm kickoff considering the "cold" temperatures of Louisville, KY near Jan 1.

Night game would be absolutely brutal.

I'll throw in Myrtle Beach, SC.

Can we name another city that has more hotels? (without a bowl game)

Why not play at Coastal Carolina's field?

It would be a great location...however the field would need to be expanded to at least 30,000 seats.
Looks like about 15,000

Actually Old Dominion would be closer to 30,000.

for those arguing against holding bowls in over teams home stadiums, I guess you are also for moving the rose bowl out of the rose bowl since ucla plays there.

if a staduim can handle the logistics of a bowl game it should have every opportunity to host one reguardless of who plays there.

We don't have to worry about UCLA playing in the Rose Bowl for the foreseeable future...

Myrtle Beach would be a great destination - if the bowls were played at a time when you could go golfing and hang out on the beach...

A snippet from the wiki article:

"The bowl organizers' first choices for the game were the University of Kentucky and the University of Alabama. Kentucky was given an invitation to play in the game but the team's lettermen voted 18-12 to refuse the bid. (Kentucky's players also voted to turn down bowl bids, including one to the Gator Bowl, in 1953 despite a 7-2-1 record and in 1954 after going 7-3.) One reason that Kentucky declined was that the Wildcats had received poor treatment from the Louisville crowd during a 51-0 win over the University of Hawaii at Cardinal Stadium in their season opener."

A shame, really, may have doomed the bowl, but some things never change = Louisville folks just don't like Ukay. 01-lauramac2 05-mafia 05-nono

Neither the Ville nor B-Ham are destination cities, so probably would not travel to either city for a bowl. Louisville has the very chain 4th Street Live, Bardstown Road, skiing in Paoli and pretty much that is it and B-Ham has a hole in the wall club or two.

Thanks for the link...I love reading those Wikipedia links about obscure old bowl games. Didn't realize it was Howard Cosell's first national broadcast.

If Birmingham follows thru on a new domed stadium, B'ham is the better choice.

Agreed. I thought that U of L would have been better served by having an on-campus dome (not unlike Syracuse's Carrier Dome) for football and basketball. Of course, Mayor for Life (Louisville Mayor Jerry Abramson) would not have approved unless if it was built downtown, so now the Louisville/Jefferson County (KY) is about to be stuck with a high-priced brand new arena, what will soon be a mostly vacant Freedom Hall, and a smallish (for now) outdoor stadium. Hopefully the folks in Lexington are paying attention as they talk about replacing Rupp Arena . . .

The political issues in Birmingham and Jefferson County (AL), though, will make a domed stadium highly unlikely.

Play in a parking lot for all I care. The key to getting fans to a bowl game is a town with lots going on. I personally enjoy spending time in Louisville. Birmingham, not so much.
