It's Christmas Eve 2009, and North Florida has a commanding lead in the ASUN RPI. They are #112.

I could not agree more. They still suck. If they are the best in the A-Sun we have nothing this year.

Where are you getting the RPI numbers from?

Those numbers don't mean a thing. If N. Florida is #112 in the US our basketball talent in the nation is going downhill fast. The computer that is making those calculations needs to be reprogrammed to grasp reality.

About like the BCS system. It is ridiculous.

I agree Gold, I've compared their worth to a bucket of spit, but unfortunately fans across the nation are in love with the RPI and apparently the N$C$A$A selection shares the love.

I sometimes quote the RealtimeRPI.com in my posts because it appears to be a standard that folks take as science.

The RPI may be bogus, but it is a factor when the NCAA tournament committee looks at seeding.

They may use it but it is badly flawed and needs to be scraped.

N. Florida being #112 is proof of that. If N. Florida is #112 then Belmont, ETSU and Campbell must be in the top 20.

The Missouri Valley Conference figured out how to manipulate the RPI, and other conferences have figured it out also. In C-USA the last four years, Memphis' conference schedule has been set up so that they get more games against the teams with the higher RPIs (teams like UAB and Houston) than against the others. Until someone comes up with a better formula, though, I think the RPI is here to stay.

You have the give UNF credit where credit is due in this case. The tournament that they played down in Hattiesburg was their best stretch of games since joining Division 1. They took down Canisius, New Orleans, and Southern Miss in consecutive days. That is fairly impressive...ESPECIALLY the Southern Miss win, which might be the best win of the conference so far this year. Southern Miss is legit, and UNF beat them in Hattiesburg.

But yes, their RPI is greatly skewed since they played a bunch of very high majors and got trounced early in the year. I look at it as a positive for our conference. The higher our RPIs are going into conference play, the more highly ranked everyone will be by the end of the year. If Kennesaw can take down UNF in Jacksonville this weekend then we will shoot up the RPI rankings.

I agree, KB. Glad to see the improvement at UNF.

I hope UNF really is #112 or whatever. The conference needs this.

At this point...it only matters who you have played OoC. These numbers will start to shift dramatically soon.

I agree. You might have played a tough schedule but being 1-10 should not put you higher than teams with winning records. I don't care who you have played you have not won but one or two games. As the conference season moves on and the cream rises to the top some of these RPI numbers will change.

UNF must be improving I guess. They won again tonight.

What happened to Belmont losing to FGC at home?

UNF beat Kennesaw State tonight, FGCU beat Belmont and Mercer snuck one out by 1 point at Jacksonville. It's gonna be a WEIRD league season.
