There are several theories as to why Mike left a lot of folks with a bad taste in their mouths. But the one undeniable fact is, that like LRTrojan writes, he won games, he created fan interest and he created pride in the program. Most of that is gone now, but there's no reason why it can't be rejuvanated. As to why he's still at UAM, I think his time passed. He missed his opportunity when he turned down the Marquette job. That could have put him in the big time, but the Lamar job was the wrong choice for a lot of reasons. But that still doesn't diminish what he accomplished for our program. He needs to be in our Hall of Fame. No doubt. I hope we don't wait until he's dead to do it.01-lauramac2

Ynocpirt had this discussion the other day. I don't for a minute diminish the things Mike did here. He put us on the map and created unbelievable excitement. On the other hand the fact that he is at UAM argues strongly against those that believe he is a "great" coach. If he was a great coach some DI school would have hired him. Even if a coach is a *******, as long as he can coach (Bob Huggins?) someone will hire him. Personally, I liked Mike and he always treated my wife and I well. He was clearly the right coach, at the right time for UALR. However, the fact that he is languishing about as far from the big time as you can get is pretty telling.

I know absolutely nothing about Mike Newell's coaching ambitions but, it's possible that UAM or something similar is where he wants to be.

There was an influential ASU fan here for a game when they were replacing Dickie Nutt, and he told some of us, including LRTrojan, that Mike really wanted that job, and this fellow was supposedly trying to help him get it, but Brady was hired. So it's obvious Mike would like to coach at the D1 level again.04-cheers

Unless Mike's personality and desire to be the best he can be has totally changed, UAM is not where he wants to be. Hopefully, he is happy and has accepted the fact that he likely won't move up to a higher level at this point. Certainly he is doing what he loves to do (coach) and has had pretty good success there considering the obstacles he faces in Monticello.

Why don't you and Mr. Mediocrity enlighten me on what constitutes a great coach. I realize that I should have looked in the Mediocrity dictionary under "great coach" and I would see that picture of Steve Shields. Sorry about that.

I don't know that Mike was a great coach, but he damn sure looked like one when he was here, by winning 68% of his games, creating a bunch of excitement, not backing down from those SOB's at the UofA, and putting this school on the map in basketball. I suspect some of his "troubles" that some here like to refer to all the time, but never give details about, came because of his brashness and his success here. But, you'd think that the longtime fans who enjoyed the ride while he was here, would do everything in their power to make sure he was honored by electing him to the Hall of Fame instead of taking every opportunity to run him down.

I guess the best definition of a great coach is one that other schools want to hire, and now days are willing to pay millions to do so.

Shields is not a great coach, at least not yet. He is a good coach.
