Georgia Tech (Official Game Thread) - 12/22/09
Well, this isn't a game that many people expect us to compete in to be honest. On the road, ACC team that before this past weekend's loss was ranked in the top 25 I believe. Perhaps GT was looking ahead to the Kennesaw game when they got beat by Florida State :).

I have seen GT play, and they have two BEASTS in the paint in Lawal and Favors. If we can somehow stay close in rebounding we could compete in this game, but that is going to be a tough task. Sure would be nice if we could get one of those big guys in foul trouble. Problem is that GT has two big men coming off the bench that are very solid.

Should be interesting to see how we match up. We played Notre Dame and St. Louis tough this year. Would be nice to see us take them to the wire, and would be even better to pull off an upset.

Who is going to the game? I said I was going to go, but unfortunately I am not willing to pay what I would've had to for the tickets. The tickets listed on ramblinwreck.com are $20, add a $10 fee and that's $30. Not to mention having to pay to park. I'll stick with 920 AM for the broadcast. Let us know how it goes for those of you who are going to be in attendance.

I still plan on attending the game. I am going to buy some tickets when I get down there. I will be able to find a deal.

If our guys come out with the attitude that they have nothing to lose and play hard I can see us sticking around for a while. I have a a feeling this one will come down to foul issues with KSU as they try to contain GT's big men inside. We need big games out of Woods, Cummings, and Green/Matt. This is another game to see how well Cummings matches up with elite ACC talent. Lets hope he comes to play.

I'm going. We're parking at the bookstore. You could buy tickets at the box office and save yourself the $10 fee. There is no way that it will be sold out. I keep thinking that we are going to get blown out by 40 points but you never know. I'm sure that Markeith will still get his but I see the biggest problems coming on the defensive end. We just do not match up at all. We will probably run a zone the whole time because none of our guys can check their starting 5 man to man. One good thing for us is that one of their best guards, Iman Shumpert is out so that's one less guy we have to worry about. Their other starting guard, Mfon Udofia is really good. I keep thinking thinking if we got beat by Belmont (As non athletic of a team as I've ever seen), then we are going to get destroyed today. This is coming from a huge Georgia fan as well so this isn't easy to admit. Our best chance for success is to hope that both Gani Lawal and Derrick Favors are in foul trouble or injured for the majority of the game. Zone up and hope that they aren't hitting their 3 pointers. Their best 3 point shooters that will play today are: #0 Mfon Udofia .390, #11 Brian Oliver .442, #35 Zach Peacock .455, #41 Glen Rice .375, #10 Lance Storrs .333. I'll have my KSU sweatshirt on. Hopefully I'm not the only one in my section.

There is a lot of good but obvious stuff being said here but the big thing is that Ladaris needs to shoot freethrows today and Heramb needs to play like somebody punched him in the mouth. A good performance by Woods would help Markeith today too.

I am a true fan, so C U there!

I disagree with not matching up with them. The teams that will give us the most trouble are those really fundamental teams like Notre Dame and Belmont. They do an excellent job of using our aggressiveness against us with pump fakes and backdoor cuts. Tech is not a very fundamental team. Honestly they play some of the ugliest basketball of any team that was ranked in the top 25.

We have some very good athletes as well. If we can contain them from getting offensive rebounds this game will be competitive. This game is far from easy, but they are not the best team we've played so far. That still goes to Notre Dame.

Rebounding and turnovers...we rebound well, and avoid turning the ball over we will compete. If we do not we won't. We have enough athletes to match up speed-wise...but the rebounding is worrisome. We need Heramb, Green, and JMac to play HUGE today, and our guards will have to get involved on the boards.

Good call about the boards KB.

And newsflash for those who think so: Notre Dame was not that good. They are about to be punched in the mouth at home against Villanova and they have already lost to Loyola Marymont ... at home.

If we play tech better than we played Notre Dame and are within 17 points at the end, I will be ecstatic. That would mean would could easily match up with anybody else left on our schedule and have the potential to run the table and get to the Atlantic Sun Conference tournament as the number one seed. Considering this is year one with Markeith and Ladaris, I know this team hasn't even come close to reaching their potential yet.

Oh for Christ's sake. I thought you all had come back down to reality. You will will be a decent team in this leauge, I think better than previous years, but COME ON.

Disagree with the comment.. talk to the poster.. Trying to paint this picture of our entire fanbase being unrealistic is getting old. Some of us have never left reality. Most of us actually have a clear picture of where we stand.

Tough game today agaisnt GT.. No real surprises though. Hoped to see a better performance from Heramb.

My point was Georgia Tech is SIGNIFICANTLY better than every single team in the Atlantic Sun conference and if we had been able to keep it close we would have the POTENTIAL to beat everybody else on our schedule. Considering I had earlier aluded to us getting blown out by 40, I didn't think there was a snowballs chance of that happening. I'm glad we stayed within 30 though. We are improved. Last years team got beat by 20 points against a very bad UGA team. It shows the levels of competition out there. As good as Belmont and ETSU appear every week, even they are worlds apart from the big boys.

Woods and Dixon played well today. It came down to lack of depth down low. I thought Green did a decent job against the GT big boys in the first half. He is very long and did a good job keeping the ball out of their hands. He was missed for most of the second half once he got into foul trouble. There was a huge drop off when he wasnt on the floor. Matt didnt play well. They covered up Cummings anytime he touched the ball. I also have to be honest and say we missed alley oops and decent looks throughout a lot of the game. Good effort by the team and I am looking forward to conference play.

Dixon vs. Kelvin (I think Dixon needs more time on the floor)

I wasn't able to listen to much of the game, but it sounds like their size advantage was the difference. That is pretty much what we expected. I also think that we can compete with anyone in the ASun, but by no means expect us to enter the tournament as the number 1 seed. My hope is simply that we are playing our best basketball at the end of the year. If we are doing that then we have a legitimate chance to win the tournament. That is really all we can hope for in our first year.

Continue to improve...that is the mantra. We won't see it every game, but hopefully over the course of the season we will be able to see a trend of improvement.

What is our most glaring weakness---
We have good guard play but we don't have anyone other than Ladaris that wants to rebound. Our other big men don't box out. Its not how high you can jump but its the fundamentals of boxing out. If we don't improve in this area it will be a long season. We get solid play from our perimenter players but we need someone to step up and try to claim every rebound

Kennesaw State Head Coach Tony Ingle
"The bottom line is that we couldn't make shots. You need to make a shot along the way to keep your confidence up, and not from an individual standpoint, but from a team standpoint. Everybody was waiting for someone else to make a shot, and consequently, no one could. Georgia Tech played good defense, but we had some (good) looks. And we had some shots we should have made. And right before halftime they built on the lead a little bit, but we were in the game. And (we) could have made it even more interesting if we had made some shots early. We came out in the second half and played okay. We tried to dictate tempo as much as we could. Our strategy was to stay as close as we can as long as we can, make a good showing and hustle and execute.
"They're a good basketball team, too. We finished hustling, scrapping and playing all the way to the buzzer.
"The frustration, from my standpoint, is knowing how hard our guys work and how hard they want it. They want to make those shots. They want to play close. Obviously, you want them to win. That goes without saying.
"I saw some things in my players that we got to get worked out after we get back from Christmas.
"This is a great team to play before the Christmas break. It gives us a good test. But we will not play a team this good until we get to the NCAA tournament. We've got to work hard and hopefully play a team like this in the NCAA tournament. And to play better (than today) when that happens."

The fact is that both Kelvin and Spencer are valuable, and it is not a situation of one versus the other. We need them both to win. We need Kelvin's shooting and leadership, and we need Spencer's tenacity and defense. They compliment each other well....
