A guy on a UofL message board posted a link to a story about Alabama not being eligible to be in the National Championship game due to NCAA infractions and poll voting. Anyone heard that before?

Could you post a link here? As far as I know, Alabama's probation ended before last season IIRC. They were ineligible to be part of the coaches poll when Dennis Franchione was there because they had a bowl ban and major scholarship reduction.

If they weren't eligible they woundn't be there. Also if they were not eligble the press would have had a field day all season printing articles all season on how great Alabama was and how they could have played in the National Championship and won it. It would have made good press fodder for the season to sell papers and magazines.

Oh no, that can't be. That would not fit into Herbies and ESPNs way of thinking.

As far as I know, major probation for AFCA always meant bowl bans. When Alabama and Kentucky were on bowl bans at the beginning of this decade, they were ineligible to receive votes in the coaches poll. See the 2002 season when Bama was ineligible for bowls and finished 10-3 in the AP Poll. The Tide did not receive any votes in the coaches poll because of the ban.

If anything, the wording should be clarified. The NCAA and AFCA clearly have two different definitions of major probation.
