The really bad news is that our deficit is GROWING not shrinking as often implied by athletics. I am not sure if Carol and Richard will be able to sustain this increasing investment level for long. This is not a BOT issue. The east side now has allies on the main part of campus due to the cutbacks imposed by the lack of state funding etc. I hope our new fundraisers and other steps work quickly.

RE: UAB - Follow the money.
The numbers don't add up... even Kevin Malone could tell you that. But it puts things in perspective.

I'm sure what most people will focus on is the issue brought up most by the UAB Athletics detractors, which is the university subsidy. It's interesting to note that Alabama has a 4+mil subsidy, Troy a 7+mil subsidy (paying for half of Troy's entire budget). UAB isn't even in the top 5 of subsidized programs, with three BCS programs getting subsidies over 10mil.

I agree with Schard and the East side can suck a big one. You can quote me on that. Oh and before I get a lecture I know what subsidize means. Every program in the country does this including the two Rogue SEC programs in this state. UAB Athletics is well worth the investment for the University and if the East side screws with UAB Athletics I will never spend another dime with the University in any avenue. I will take my personal and professional business elsewhere. We all know revenue needs to increase. This is no great discovery here. It just seems that some get their rock off pointing out every thing they can to get a dig into UAB about along with gloom and doomers making predictions about our future. I hope it was good for them.

RE: UAB - Follow the money.
For what it's worth, I heard this past week that UAT football, after paying for all other athletic programs, still cleared over $22 million in 2008-09.

The rich get richer.

I can sympathize with your view, but until you are spending in the 8-digit range with UAB, those "on the east side" will have bigger sway with the UAB administration. NIH grants are what talk on campus.

I'm sorry, I wasn't clear in my original statement.

The numbers provided for the ESPN list for the UAB expenditures column total only $13.7 million. There is $8.25 million in expenditures left unaccounted for. I guess the accountant who sent in the list works for Jefferson County?

Unfortunately this number includes all 12 games we play. All practices at legion field incuding spring game. If the average of that number was say $1.5 million per yr. for 19 years thats $28.5 million. How much do we pay to play at Legion Field. Oh, and how much would a OCS cost.
