Looks Like UNO Is Done
Here's a link that I got from Slatton's twitter about the demise of UNO Division I athletics. A sad day indeed.

http://www.neworleans.com/sports/uno/282...n-iii.html

But really guys, who is UNO going to compete against in Division III? Are there really enough Division III schools in close enough proximity to UNO to make even that practical? NAIA schools give scholarships, as do Division II schools, so trying to compete against them without scholarships is pretty foolhardy. High academic schools like those in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference, and Centenary, aren't going to rush to play a State University with a student population 10 times or more than what they have, etc.

Will the Sun Belt add another team to replace UNO? And if so, who are the likely candidates. We all have been hearing for quite awhile that it's inevitable at some point that Denver will leave the Belt. Personally I'd like to have enough teams where we could play a round robin and have enough league games to where we wouldn't have to bring in non D1 teams.04-cheers

There is absolutely no reason for the SBC to try to replace UNO with another school. After the departure of UNO, the league will have 12 members, all of which play basketball, and nine of which play Division I football.

12 is a very easy number for conference divisions and scheduling. Just refer to the SEC, ACC, and Big 12. My guess is that we will be headed back to a 16 game conference basketball schedule with each team playing the members of its division twice, and everybody on the other side once. Nine is a really good number for football scheduling as well as each team gets four home and four away conference games.

This is a perfect example of why Chickenhawg fans can get on others nerves. Arrogance that is frankly unearned, unwarranted, and certainly uncalled for.

Agree. Balances the divisions. Only problem is that when Denver leaves it will be unbalanced again. Also lose a easy trip and natural rival for ULL.

Wow. What a sad day for UNO fans. Their basketball team was actually playing quite well up until this happened. Certainly 12 is a much better number for the Sun Belt, but I wouldn't wish this on anyone- Not even Scotto's Wolfs.

Agreed on all accounts.

Tough break for some UNO fans that have put up with a lot.

No need to expand. 13 was the abnormality, 12 is a good number for basketball.

It is going to mess some things up huge since the 18 game schedule created some scheduling anomolies where teams played other teams on the road multiple times and now those games won't be returned.
