RE: KSU Announces Launch of Football Exploratory Committee
Dooley to head KSU football committeeAtlanta Business Chronicle
Kennesaw State University is interested in starting a football program and has tapped The University of Georgia’s legendary former football coach Vince Dooley to chair an exploratory committee.
Dooley also will head athletics fundraising at the university.
“The potential of launching a football program from the ground up is an intriguing challenge to me, and I cannot think of a better place to do that than at Kennesaw State,” Dooley said in a news release. “This is an exciting place to be. This university is on the move.”
KSU President Daniel S. Papp held a press conference on Thursday to announce the formation of a 33-member exploratory committee that will formally gauge support for a football program at the suburban Atlanta university. The committee will study the pros and cons of having a football team, how much it would cost, how much support exists, what facilities would be needed, what would be needed to maintain National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Title IX compliance, and how football would impact other athletics programs at KSU.
The committee will provide a final report of its recommendations in September 2010.
Papp said that since he was named president of KSU in 2006 he has been asked numerous times about football.
“Our response has been that we do not have enough information to answer definitively the many questions that underlie such a decision,” Papp said. “Now that we are a Division I university, it’s a good time to start answering those questions. I cannot think of anyone more qualified to guide us through this process than Coach Dooley.”
Until September, the 22,300 KSU student body had only a 1.7-acre field on the main campus for sports activities. In October, the KSU Sports and Recreation Park -- a state-of-the-art facility with an indoor training facility and two regulation-size fields for intramural and club sports -- opened its doors. The 14-acre sports park is one parcel of 88 acres of new land east of Interstate 75 acquired by the KSU Foundation in the past year. The new stadium will be another major component of the sports park project.

9 months...that is great that they set a timeline on the study. By the end of next year we should have a good idea of whether this football thing is going to happen or not.

Great move! I wonder how this date may coincide with recruiting and such in the event that they decide to move forward with a team. I am pretty sure we would field a team around 2012 or 2013.

I think our director of media has a lot to do with this. He worked with the AJC for a long time. That was a smart hire by Papp/Waples to bring in a guy with strong Atlanta connections. The more we are in the paper (for the right reasons) the better.

RE: KSU Announces Launch of Football Exploratory Committee
Well, nine months is a long time to wait, but I suppose that is the price of thoroughness.
I just hope at the end of all this, the answer isn't no!
Nice to see the coverage this has received in the last week or two as well.

The picture of Dooley, Papp, and Radow with the KSU hats is great! I love the football helmet in the background.

Me too. Maybe its just the lighting, but is there a white stripe along the top?

Not a lightning stripe on the top, just a white stripe down the middle of helmet to divide the helmet in half. I think it is a great design. It is simple and effective. It is a black helmet, divided by a thick white stripe down the middle with the gold circle owl logo on each side of the helmet. Simple is better when it comes to creating a classic brand. It looks great from the half of a helmet that we can see.
