UT football facing even more NCAA scrutiny
Per a Wolken Re-Tweet tonight:

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/12/09/sports...ml?_r=1&hp

An excerpt:
Quote:N.C.A.A. Scrutiny Seen on Tennessee’s Recruiting

Marcus Lattimore, a running back who made an unofficial visit to Tennessee but said he would not enroll there, said multiple Tennessee hostesses attended a game at James F. Byrnes High School in Duncan, S.C., in September. He said they brought signs, including one that read, “Come to Tennessee.”

“I haven’t seen no other schools do that,” he said. “It’s crazy.”

The hostesses are considered representatives of the university, which would mean they could not recruit players off campus. Therefore, the visits may be considered violations of N.C.A.A. recruiting rules.

Two of Lattimore’s teammates, Brandon Willis and Corey Miller, have orally committed to Tennessee. Lattimore described the hostesses as “real pretty, real nice and just real cool.” He said he thought they had “a lot” of influence in Miller’s and Willis’s commitments to Tennessee.

Because of their influence on recruits, the recruiting hostesses have become popular with Tennessee fans. Bryce Brown, the country’s top running back recruit last year, who is a freshman at Tennessee, was pictured on a social networking site last year with a hostess. Other Tennessee hostesses have publicly conversed with prospects through Facebook and MySpace.

Some recruits say their influence is significant.

“You don’t want to go to a college where they ain’t pretty,” Lattimore said.
...and another...
Quote:Kiffin’s numerous secondary N.C.A.A. violations could be a factor or might have prompted the investigation.

“Secondaries mean something to the N.C.A.A.,” Evrard said in a telephone interview. “It’s very telling if an institution continues to report secondaries particularly if they’re in the same category. If you keep doing the same thing over and over and keep reporting it, that would trigger the N.C.A.A.’s enforcement staff to possibly go in and look at some of that activity.”

Last time I check, UT is a BCS school so it really doesn't matter.

USC gave a football player's family a mansion and then gave cash to basketball player on a street corner and we see the penalties they got.

UT will be ok.

Colorado got hit pretty big with what seems to be the same situation. If anything they may loose some prized recruits and the first ones I would imagine to abandon ship would be Corey Miller and Brandon Willis (specifically mentioned in article). They were originally FSU commits, guess we now know how UT got them to switch.

Link to article in NY Times-

Thanks for the link. Assuming the hostess situation is a secondary violation (it could be major IMO), the NCAA may view UT-K's multiple secondary violations as an indicator of lack of institutional control.

Is this a case where preception can be more damaging than reality or perhaps the preceptions is the reality. Now way this cannot hurt

NTR but hilarious- NCAA investigating UT football
The NCAA is investigating UT's football team for improper recruiting methods. I heard this on the radio this morning. Apparently, coaches and boosters have been sending "hostesses" (not the cupcakes) to the games of recruits. Who knows how much trouble they'll get in, but hearing about the incompetancy of Lane Kiffin always brightens up my day.

P.S. Mods feel free to move this thread if you must, but I know everyone on the board enjoys a good LOL at the Vols once in a while.

I know everybody is excited but dont get your hopes up to much. I have known this was going to come out for a couple of weeks. Unfortunately for the UT-haters nothing more than a slap on the wrist from the NCAA if anything.

Nothing will come of this...the NCAA is too busy punishing Memphis to look into UTK or Kansas or USC or Duke...

My brother in law is a recent Utk alum, and he said it was pretty common knowledge the "hostesses" would sometimes get pretty cozy with the recruits, if ya catch my drift.

One of the b-ball player's (Childress) girlfriends was a hostess, and by some accounts, quite a mattress-back.

I'm sure the oral commitments of Brandon Willis and Corey Miller had nothing to do with the "oral commitment" displayed by the "hostesses". Rimshot Sorry, but it was all set up on a tee.

Nah, that doesn't happen anymore in college FB recruiting, right?
