On the Mark-eith: KSU Frosh Takes Weekly Award
Great photo of him dunking with harangody watching lol

http://www.atlanticsun.org/mbasketball/news/102/3954/

Cummings’ monster week pushed his scoring average to 17.3 points per game. He trails only the much-heralded John Wall from Kentucky among freshmen across the nation in that category.

GFWO - I deleted your thread, because we already had one. KR got his up first, so I had to defer to his. But thanks for being quick on updating the board :)

Great honor for Markeith. He is a stud in the making.

Congratulations. Cummings, thus far, is the best freshman in the league.

I also wonder if some of this isn't other coaches hoping that the can inflate Markeith's ego early in the season and hurt our team. It wouldn't surprise me to see some of this happen. Especially win Belmont goes 3-0 this week, and 2-0 in conference play with senior Keaton Belcher leading the way with 16 points per game.

Might be conspiracy theory on my part, but it wouldn't surprise me to think that the though at least crossed some other coach's minds :)

haha I don't think so KB. Cummings is the natural choice. I don't think teams want Cummings feeling confident to be honest.

Week stats

Team Record: 1-1

21 points, eight rebounds and six assists for the week.

vs.

3-0

16.0 points and 4.3 rebounds per game

vs.

Team Record: 1-1 (L to KSU and Cummings)

26.5 points, 8.5 assists, 4.0 rebounds, and 2.0 steals

vs.

Team Record: 0-2

32 points vs. Lipscomb and 25 vs. Belmont

Lets just hope whatever the motivation was, that Markeith takes this in stride and keeps improving.

markeith will only improve. I'd like to see more post game out of him. He can out muscle any guard and small forwards in the league.

He is getting there. You have to remember that he was strictly a guard for his whole life...I think he entered his senior year in high school around 6'2". He grew late if I have heard correctly. He has a long and great college career ahead of him, and he has the tools to be not just good but great. Let's hope that he works to make himself a great player and not a James Florence type player (the kind of guy that just wants to score his points and really hasn't improved that much since his freshman year).

I agree KB. I hope he is mature enough to understand that he can't allow his ego to get in the way of his future career and the team. If he is smart he will work on all aspects of his game and keep a level head. If he does this it will not only benefit his career but the team as a whole.

Do you guys think he's a legit 6'7"? I've saw him once on campus this semester but I didn't get to stand right next to him so I'm not sure. I'm 6'4" and I can definitely vouch that Artie Marine and JMac are a legit 6'6". So far I've seen on campus Artie Marine, Cortez Irby, JMac, Markeith, Kelvin McConnell, Spencer Dixon, Matt Heramb, and Junior Ajayi. Who have any of you guys seen? Is there any chance that I'll run into any of these guys at the gym or do they strictly play at their own facilities?

Markeith is 6'6" ... basically the same height as JMac. Perhaps in certain shoes he would measure 6'7". It isn't like it makes that much of a difference. When he dunks on someone I doubt they are thinking, "man was that guy who just threw down on me 6'6" or 6'7"? :)

Haha. Where it matters is when he has to guard someone who is 6'8" and just as if not even more athletic than he is. He may never run into that guy in conference play but out of conference he will.

There aren't too many 6'8" guards out there that I know of, and if there were, my guess is that they aren't near as athletic as Markeith. It isn't like he is our post defender. He is a wing player that Ingle chooses to post up when matchups dictate. I don't think Markeith will run into anyone this year that completely dominates him physically from the wing, and in fact my guess is that more often than not he will be one physically dominant. He just has to keep working on becoming a basketball player and not just a physical specimen.

I have been particularly impressed with Cummings' ability to pass, which is often times absent from players of his size, athleticism, and (lack of) collegiate experience.

I agree KB that his ceiling will hinge on his ability to learn, develop, and "be coached". Otherwise, 3 years from now he'll be talked about "as a good player...BUT..."

As I was watching our game against Tennessee, I was thinking how their players, while undoubtedly talented, have not developed over the years. I'm not saying that will happen to Cummings; it's the reason I'm always cautiously optimistic about young talented players.

RE: On the Mark-eith: KSU Frosh Takes Weekly Award
You are dead on Faithful. A young man has to allow himself to be coached, and just as important he has to be self-motivated to be great. I have seen many players with mediocre talent become great players because they were coachable and self-motivated. I think Mike Smith would be a great example. He doesnt have any physical abilities that separate him from the pack, but he is coachable and self motivated. That has turned him into a tough as nails, multi-faceted player that can defend the post, shoot the three, and be the kind of player that they rest of the team will follow into hell or high-water.

Markeith has a long time to answer those kind of questions. Everything I hear is good, but the proof is in the pudding. We will know how great he wants to become as we see him progress or stay stagnant.

James Florence is a great example of a player that came into the league in a similar fashion and in my opinion never really improved. He is still an incredible scorer and athlete, but he never took his game or his team to the next level. In the next 4 years I hope to see Markeith take continual steps in the right direction. If he does, the sky is the limit for himself and our team.
