Lipscomb (Official Game Thread) - 12/05/09
Lets get this started. Big game for the Owls. Another tough OT defeat last night. One that we could have won, which makes it hurt all the more. Lipscomb almost put up triple figures on Mercer, which is a little shocking to me.

We are going to need to figure out a way to stop Hodzic in the paint, and apparently this Burgason is a decent shooter (8 three pointers vs. Mercer).

Should be an exciting game, and a good test. Hoping for a split to start the season vs. the Nashville duo.

I think you beat DAVID lipscomb if you keep up the pressure defense and don't make stupid offensive mistakes. If you had played smarter you would have beat Belmont. You had the size and talent to win.

100 percent agree. I hate it when we just throw up three's like its our only option.

It will be interesting to see if Ingle makes any adjustments for tonight's game. I said it before Belmont, and I'll say it again today: we shot 37% from the field on Thursday. We HAVE to pick that up, play like the 2nd half. We shot 46% in the 2nd half. When you shoot 39 three pointers, you're bound to have a low FG %.

Thats number one.

Defense played well at times on Thursday, then they'd allow a backdoor cut for a dunk, or a layup down the lane (the way the OT started never should've happened). Cut down on the easy baskets, and we can mask our poor shooting.

If we can do either of these things or both, we should have a great chance to win tonight. I actually agree with Goldfinger..."if we would have played smarter we would have beaten Belmont".

The easy baskets from the cuts have happend all year. our team is extremely over zelous and has a make or break mentality on defense. We need to stop that. Its hurting us more then helping. I love the intensity, but we need to pick our spots more wisely. We have the making of a team that could be very dangerous defensively.

Pre-Game Article on ksuowls.com:

--------------------------------

KENNESAW, Ga. – Kennesaw State will look to get back in the win column on Saturday evening when they host the Lipscomb Bisons in an Atlantic Sun Conference game at 7:30 p.m. at the KSU Convocation Center.

The Owls (3-4, 0-1 A-Sun), who will be ending their brief, two-game homestand, enter Saturday’s game after a heart-wrenching overtime loss to Belmont on Thursday night, despite a 32-point, 11-rebound performance by Markeith Cummings.

Cummings had a stellar night as he posted his second double-double of the year. The redshirt freshman tied the game with a three-pointer from in front of the Owls bench as four Belmont defenders clawed at the shot with 3.8 seconds left.

The Savannah, Ga. native is one of three Kennesaw State players averaging in double figures this season as he is leading the team is scoring at 18 points per game. Jon-Michael Nickerson and Kurtis Woods are scoring over 12 points a game as the Owls are averaging close to 80 points as a team.

Lipscomb (2-4, 1-0 A-Sun) enters the game after defeating Mercer, 98-89, in Macon, Ga. behind a career-high 31 points from Jordan Burgason. The Bisons have won two straight games after beginning the season with four losses, which included defeats at the hands of Ohio State and Vanderbilt.

Adnan Hodzic leads the Bisons with a 22.3 points per game scoring mark and is one of only two players, along with Mercer’s James Florence (24.1 ppg), in the A-Sun averaging over 20 points per game this season. Hodzic is also averaging a team-high 8.2 rebounds and is one of only four players in the conference averaging over eight rebounds.

The Bisons have four players averaging in double-figures including Josh Slater (17.3 ppg), Brandon Brown (12.2 ppg) and Jordan Burgason (11.0 ppg) as they are averaging 79.5 points as a team on the heels of three games in which they have scored over 85 points.

The game is the eighth all-time meeting between the teams with the Bisons holding a 4-3 advantage. Kennesaw State has won three of four meetings at the KSU Convocation Center, having won the first three meetings before a, 61-44, loss last season.

The game can be heard live on 920am WGKA and is also available on-line at http://www.920WGKA.com. Play-by-play announcer Craig Corbin and color analyst Scott Webb will call the action.

For the Kids
The Kennesaw State University Department of Intercollegiate Athletics will host its "3rd Annual Teddy Bear Toss" on Saturday evening, Dec. 5 during both games of the women’s and men’s basketball doubleheader against Lipscomb at the KSU Convocation Center.

Fans who bring a teddy bear to toss during half-time of either the women’s game at 5:00 p.m. or the men’s game at 7:30 p.m. will receive half-price admission to the game. All teddy bears collected on Saturday will be donated to a local children’s charity for the holiday season.

Over the past two years, the annual event has gathered over 400 teddy bears for children around the metro-Atlanta area. The goal for this year’s event is to double the previous two-year total and have 800 teddy bears donated.

Tip-off for the Lady Owls game is at 5:00 p.m. with the Owls game following at 7:30 p.m.

What a game. It is pretty safe to say that our offense woke up. Great move by Ingle I think to use our bigs on the perimeter at times. We have skilled perimeter length in Heramb and Ladaris, and that is something other teams will have a hard time matching.

What a game...a much needed win. We sure didn't need to start out 0-2 in conference play. I think we can compete with everyone in the league this year, but most games are going to be tight...just like our first 2. It sure is going to be a great year for ASun basketball. The league is very strong this year.

I missed most of the second half due to an unfortunate Christmas party, so someone give me a recap. I watched the whole first half, and neither team could miss. It really didn't matter what defense was being played, both teams were red hot.

Great win for the team. We could not miss! 76% on three point shots. Amazing. 63% overall. Also, our bench played lights out tonight. Kelvin (19), Heramb(11), and Green (16) came in off the bench to score in double figures. Great depth.

http://www.ksuowls.com/news/2009/12/5/MB...90045.aspx

KENNESAW, Ga. – In a night filled with record shattering performances, Kennesaw State connected on a school-best 19 three-pointers, including making 13-of-15 long range shots in the first half as the Owls defeated Lipscomb, 97-91, at the KSU Convocation Center.

“This was a good win for us over a good team,” said Kennesaw State head coach Tony Ingle. “I am very proud of how we played tonight and the effort we had. We applied pressure on offense, played good defense and found a way to win.”

The Owls (4-4, 1-1 A-Sun) were sizzling in the early goings as they hit their first eight 3-pointers en route to their first Atlantic Sun Conference win of the season. The Black and Gold built a 37-29 lead after Kelvin McConnell hit the first of his four, first half, three-pointers.

“We did a really good job of sharing the ball tonight,” said McConnell, who was 5-for-5 from beyond the arc in the game. “It wasn’t just me, we did a good job sharing the ball and everyone shot the ball well.”

The three-point barrage started with a Spencer Dixon three on the Owls first possession for a 3-2 lead, Kurtis Woods followed with a string of four straight long-range baskets in a little over two minutes, the later breaking a 14-14 tie and giving the Owls the lead they would carry the rest of the game.

“We knew they would play zone at times and we did a good job making our shots,” said Woods. “I just kind of felt it tonight and coach told me to shoot with confidence, so I did.”

In a game of wild swings, the Owls three times built double-digit leads in the first half, but the Bisons would answer back with a rally of their own. The Black and Gold eventually built a 13-point halftime lead and withstood a pair of Lipscomb runs as they connected on 76 percent shooting from the field.

In the second half, the Owls led throughout and held a 72-64 lead with 10:08 left in the game. The Bisons made a brief, 5-0, run to trim the lead to three points. However, LaDaris Green hit a jumper to push the lead back to five points at 74-69 and ignited a 6-0 run that put KSU up by nine points with 6:38 left.

“With everyone shooting well and our offense clicking, it made our defense better,” added Woods. “It increased our confidence on both ends of the court and we played more together and with more intensity on the defensive end.”

Lipscomb would climb to within four points with 2:02 left before McConnell slammed the door in fitting fashion with a three-pointer as the Owls would keep the Bisons at arms length the rest of the game.

“We worked on the zone getting ready for tonight and our guys came ready to play,” added Coach Ingle. “We were working hard and we played a great game.”

Kennesaw State set a plethora of Division I era records in the win, establishing new marks for points (97), 3-pointers (19), 3-point percentage (76.0%), field goal percentage (63.6%) and the 30 assists eclipsed the record of 25 tied against Western Illinois last season.

With a break for finals this week, the Owls will be back in action on Sunday, Dec. 13 when they play the Maine Black Bears in Orono, Maine at 1 p.m.

Markeith with 10 assists pleases me. I'm hoping that big game from Ladaris gives him confidence. hie has great potential.

Ladaris looked great last night. Another good sign is that we outrebounded them by 10 I think. There weren't that many rebounds to be had, but I can't remember any easy offensive rebounds that we gave up.

Our rebounding should continue to improve as Heramb and Green get into the swing of things. Remember that Heramb hasn't really played in 3 years, so this is a learning experience for him as well.
