I remember 84 BYU winning it all in football. Let me ask this, when was the last TRUE mid major to win it all in basketball? Would you consider 1990 UNLV a mid major? Before that it was 1963, Loyola, that dates back to when the NIT was relevant. So while you guys are dumping all these resources into basketball, it's not getting the one thing that I'm sure ALL OF YOU WANT. I mean no offense to C-USA basketball teams, but outside of Houston, Tulsa and Memphis, it's horrendous. So in order for you guys to get basketball the one thing it's been wanting, you've got to get football improved, and allowing donors to basically tell you who you are and aren't going to hire usually doesn't work.
I pointed out the Florida situation because they are the most efficient and well ran athletic department in intercollegiate athletics. I don't blame you guys for wanting Fred Smith to make decisions over the A.D., but if he's that bad, start parking moving vans in front of his house. GET HIM OUT OF THERE and fix Memphis athletics as a whole. Say what you want and make useless comments about ETSU, why you're here, etc... I'm here to hopefully wake you people up. If Memphis gets into a situation where football could be disbanded, you think C-USA will have a use for you? You don't think that Coach Pastner won't abandon ship for more money and a more stable administration?

What in the world are you talking about? Dumping all these resources? How's that working out for UTK in basketball?

i don't consider teams like 90's UNLV...or current Memphis, Gonzaga, and Xavier squads to be mid-major...mid-majors don't get Final Fours and #1 recruiting classes...last mid-major to get close was George Mason making the Final Four a couple years back.

from what you've said...you feel Memphis is "unstable"...yet the last football and basketball coaches were in place for 9 years...the basketball coach was wildly successful...the football coach brought Memphis 5 bowls in 6 years. (both made a million or more)

Memphis now has a budget of 40 million...

you ask if Josh will stick around...lets look at who he replaced...Cal won...we took him from a salary of 1 million to 2.5+ million...unless UNC, Duke, or maybe Arizona comes calling...i could see Josh staying here 9-10 years...

Go Tigers!!!

We surely do appreciate all the help coming from ETSU. Their vast knowledge of all forms of athletics on national championship level undoubtedly is an asset which we should regard with awe. I note, however, that they share the same part of the state with another institution that wears a bilious orange color which makes any comment suspect.

Almost every school has either one big donor or a small group of whales who run the show. Anybody who doesn't understand this is very naive.

But do the big donors at those schools have enough power to hand pick head coaches?

Pickens does. He tried to buy Self during the NCAA's.

It doesn't seem as though Memphis football has been fine. You're not drawing the fannies in the seats you need, nor getting the wins you should be getting. As I've said before, Memphis being successful in football/i.e. more than basketball is good for the state.
Short term it has worked for you guys in basketball. Re-visit the discussion in three, four, five years. And while I don't have an issue with money men having input on the hires, I just think it can turn into more of a "Jerry Jones" type person puppetizing your athletic department. that being said, I hope it works and doesn't turn into an Al Groh situation at Virginia.
Oh really. You've made multiple posts here with sarcastic tones. Now it is all "for the good of the state". Sorry fish ain't bitin'. Basic manners say you don't walk into somebody's house and spit on the floor.

You might consider changing your handle to Eddie Haskell. Condescending posts -- then act all innocent when it is dished back.

Well said Jay 04-rock

Back in 1924, James Buchanan Duke gave $40 million to Trinity College. In appreciation, they renamed the school Duke University.

You underestimate. Memphis - Fred Smith = Detroit.

RE: Who runs things at Memphis?
We have our own ******* that gets burned in effigy. How far did Davidson make it a couple of years ago with Stephen Curry? Tommy made it nine years primarily due to Rip's recruiting and DeAngelo Williams. That whole era of Tiger football bought the coach four years add that with the minimum five years you're supposed to get to build a program that's fallen on hard times (See Charlie Weis, Ty Willingham, Mike Shula). You're up to a 40 million dollar athletic budget, that's great. How much of that comes from private money vs. student fees? Oh by the way Pittsburgh is better, and does it with LESS MONEY. It's funny you still spew bile out about UTK, the truth is jealousy brings forth criticism. Better facilities, on campus facilities, and while Memphis has more final four appearances, UT and the Tigers share the same amount of national championships in men's basketball. That's a FACT. At the end of the day the trophy is what matters, the Final Four appearance medal means nothing. It's like winning third place in a beauty pageant. Jealousy brings forth criticism/hatred.
On to John Calipari. His "standards" are just quality. Who actually took the SAT for Derek Rose? It's not the first time Coach Cal has cheated. Ask UMASS. The sad thing is you guys were stupid enough to think he would stay in Tiger blue and not leave for Kentucky blue because Memphis was actually the better job. He knew he had NO CHANCE of winning it all in Memphis. So he took more money, for a bigger/better fan base and a chance to win what really matters, the trophy.
And yea, ETSU is what it is, I support them because I went to school there, but I think our alums speak for themselves. We run banks, chemical companies, MRN Radio. We even taught our last two Memphis products how to freaking read! Great schools down there by the way, what do you have to do at White Station to graduate? Play ball and breathe?
