LRTrojan, you okay?
I didn't notice you at today's game and you haven't post in 3 days. Hope everything is alright. If you missed today's game, its probably better for your health.

I've been out of town several days. Just got home about an hour ago, and about crapped in my pants when I saw the paper. I know Harding has almost beaten us a time or two, but you just don't expect it to really happen.

I'm just reading all the comments right now. What I've read so far doesn't sound good though. I can't comment on last nights game since I didn't see it, but, I can, and will stand by my past statements, that we are in need of a coaching change. I've said this many times before, Steve has taken us as far as he's capable of taking us. I stand by that statement.

Harding evidently has a fine young coach. He always seems to have some shooters. Maybe he'll tells Shields how to find them.

I'm glad you weren't there to see it. It was like watching a rerun when Stevie was playing. Bozeman is a talented player, but as MJS mentioned, it seemed like "all about me". He did have 27 points, but he didn't distribute the ball at all. Five turnovers and two assists. Sorry, but that's not a point guard's statistics.

They still do nothing to get III open. He took one 3 pointer in the first half, and two in the second. He made one and had another go in and out. But they just won't give him the ball in shooting situations, even when he has an opening, and it just takes him a milisecond to get the ball off, so he doesn't have to be wide open. Mike played well, but Burton and Bails could have stayed home. Courtney showed up well. Lionel played a decent game, but doesn't need to be taking the last shot when the game is on the line, which is what happened. Alex is going to be a solid player for us.

I'm not ready to make a judgment yet, but what I saw doesn't bode well IMO. The coach is blaming our defense. No question we're behind there, but it's up to the coaches to design an offense that gets the ball in the hands of your shooters. Once Solo got his hands on the ball last night, it seemed everyone else might have just as well gone over to the sideline and watched him play one on one ball. That has to be corrected or it will be a long season.03-banghead

Is there any fan on this board who thinks we've ever run a real offense since Shields has been the coach?

Can't say I do, but can't recall the last coach we've had that's run one. However, I can't argue with the claim that our defense is a major problem. 77 points should be enough to beat a DII team. If Harding scored 80, what are Ole Miss, Memphis, Creighton, etc going to do?

They might score more than 80, but I doubt any of them will hit any more than 10 3 pointers against us, like Harding did.03-banghead

I can't remember much about Porter's offense, but I'll guarntee you that Wimp ran an offense. I can still see Malik Dixon coming off those screens and picks. Mike Newll ran an offense.

I think we try to run a Big 10-type offense. One that relies on big guys that establish position so the 1st option is inside. The problem is we don't have the really big guys to do this. 6-6 ain't big. We either need several 6-8 / 6-9 guys, or we need to change our philosophy.

It's not that we don't run an offense, it's that our offense doesn't fit our personnel. But that's just my opinion, and I don't get paid the big bucks to figure it out. And that's a good thing.

You are absolutely correct. Our offense doesn't fit our personnel. I remember when Jim Platt was coaching his first season, and I happened to be sitting at a table in the bar area waiting to be seated, and right next to me was Mike Newell, who was here recruiting for Lamar, and we had a nice visit. I never will forget what he told me about Platt. He said he was trying to fit square pegs into round holes. He had inherited a bunch of up and down, open court type players from Newell, and was trying to coach them in an offense similar to ours. I have said several times that I'm not in favor of a coaching change, but I am in favor of a change in coaching philosophy. Still holds true.04-rock

I think we all been saying this for the past five years or so.

If Shields is trying to fit square pegs into round holes, it's his own fault. He recruited the square pegs. As far as our offense not fitting our personnel, make that six years(and from what I've been reading about yesterdays game, why don't we make it seven years) that we've been saying it.
