I think we are catching up to the old league in term of fans interest and all of this doesn’t take into account that two of our members expanding their stadiums. This will keep the league average above 40k and hopefully a high 40k in a year or two which just about same time of our renewal of TV contract. I want us to catch up with the ACC. Even if none of our member doesn’t have any stadium that is over 70k seating capacity.

Silly comment. Attendance has nothing to do with the quality of football. If it did then Michigan would win the national championship just about EVERY year.

BCS is bowl centric where fans supports worth more than wins and loses. And that is the truth.

RE: History of College Football Attendance
Our attendance should go up soon. We had 4 schools (Louisville, Rutgers, Cinci, and UConn) whose stadiums maxed out at 42K or less. With Rutgers and Louisville expanding their stadiums we should see better crowds. Pitt and USF are both drawing better each year as well.

The BCS has already announced what factors will play into conferences getting automatic bids in the future. Attendance has absolutely NOTHING to do with it. Fact.

A bowl system doesn’t reward team base on merit that we can all agree. They are looking to maximize their economic impact on their community.

Maybe I shouldn’t reference BCS but for FBS football that their way of championship. In FCS, a playoff is the way they crown their championship.

Anyway, it isn’t about BCS but the point of argument is about a bowl system that looks at number of fans that support their programs.

SEC and B10 have the highest average attendance league follows by B12 and PAC10 then ACC with BE lowest. If you look at bowls that associate with those leagues you can be certain that their total bowls payout follow the same pattern.

I agree with you on the bowl system as a whole. However, you were implying that the MWC isn't BCS worthy simply because their average attendance is 31k-35k (by the way, comperable to the defending Big East champs). That's the point I was arguing.

SEC normally leads the nation in average attendance...as the SEC has lead the nation in total attendance for the past 27 years.

Here's the BCS average attendances for 2008:

SEC: 75,816
Big Ten: 70,514
Big 12: 61,993
Pac 10: 56,632
ACC: 52,806
Big East: 42,994

Thanks for the numbers... Funny how this almost perfectly correlates with (a) the quality of the bowl affiliations, (b) the value of the football-aspect of the TV contracts.

The only deviations are that the ACC has better bowl and TV arrangements than the Pac-10, and that's probably a temporary aberration because the media bought in to the ACC-Superpower hype that accompanied their raid on the Big East five years ago.

It shows the Big East to be a "tweener" conference. We're about halfway between the 2nd-worst BCS conference and the best non-BCS conference.

Thank God, our expansion to 54K is open this year and UL's expansion to 62K (?) is done next year. The question is will we sell out those seats regularly? If we do that must shift our nearly 43K towards 50K in a hurry.

Believe it's 56k, brista. And yeah, we need to get in the 50k range as a league, it'll make us look so much better...

While the ACC does have some bowl slots "out west", most bowls do take place in the South/Southeastern US...so no doubt "location" probably helps the ACC grab a slot or two more than the Pac-10...(plus, having 2 more teams...as the ACC I think had TEN teams go bowling last year...having 12 teams helps too).

Right now the Big East is firmly the #6 conference in attendance. But for the league to move up we need ALL schools to have stadiums with at least 50k capacity
WV, Pitt and USF are in 60k+
RU will be 52K
Cuse is almost 50k
Louisville is expanding and will be over 50k

So we need UConn and Cincy to step up and expand their stadiums

Another....."perk" of the ACC over the BE, is they have a few schools (Clem, FSU, VT) who help skew the avg up. Heck, Clem/FSU almost avg 80k. WVU is the only one that avgs almost 60k.

Man, looking at it, UNC, NCSU and UVA rank right behing WVU in attend.

For BE to get to 50,000 avg,
Pitt & USF have to approach 65,000
