Ding! Ding! Ding!

Big East's past and current Commish is a BASKETBALL Commish first and foremost as I think the Catholic Hoop Schools pay him a bonus for each year that he can keep the football programs "down" in the national perspective.

Being Marinatto will be receiving a 6 figure BONUS this year for losing Big East's only New Year's Day non-BCS Bowl...and losing the Sun Bowl...plus, even though it wasn't NEEDED to secure a bid in the Champs Bowl...Marinatto "threw in" the ND option as a "bonus" to his Catholic Hoop school buddies!!

Think about it...some conferences seek out the best person for the Commish job, regardless what school or conference the applicant comes from...while the Big East just seeks out the best applicant that works for PROVIDENCE...a school that doesn't even PLAY Div I-A Football.

The above says it all as to what the Big East's goals are...and more importantly, WHO (which schools) are actually in charge.

True, and understandable in light of the league's history, legacy, and priorities of its founding members.

False, and stupid.

RE: This isn't Marinatto's fault or the hoops schools faults
The blaming of the Catholic schools for the problems of the fb schools is getting REALLY OLD. Its not the fault of Providence, Marquette Depaul Villanova etc that many of FB schools dont get respect in the media. Georgetown isnt responsible for Syracuse's dismal record for the past few years. Playing Seton Hall in soccer isnt the reason UConn got blown out by UNC. SJU didnt cause WVU to choke against Pitt when they should have won and played in the NC game.
If the FB schools want respect then WIN games, increase attendence take control of yourself and the situation. The choice of commish was UNANIMOUS! If any or all of the FB schools didnt approve they shouldnt have voted for him.
Instead of blaming the BB schools maybe the focus should be on the FB programs and staff. Recruit better athletes, promote your program better in the community. Stop making up excuses and blaming others that HAVE NOTHING to do with FB and take resonsibility.

If and when the FB schools beat top programs on a consistent basis and they still don't get respect then MAYBE you can argue the BB schools are keeping them down, but even them its a stretch. Until then stop whining, win the games you should, get the fan support at bowl and regular season games and control your destiny

RE: This isn't Marinatto's fault or the hoops schools faults
If there is blame for anything the football schools need only blame themselves. The door was opened twice in the last five years to walk and they stayed. They threatened to walk when the conference was raided and stayed when they saw it was more lucrative to do so, and could have announced that they were walking June 30th of his year for free and chose to stay again. Evidently the numbers prove that the conference hybrid is the better way to go rather than cutting this 3 headed monster off and going seperate ways. Football schools like Pitt, Syracuse, and Conneticut are not walking away from the BE unless they are going to join a better conference that pays more money. They are basketball schools first. UConn was a charter member with football in 1AA when they helped to start this league. Pitt tore its on campus football stadium down and replaced it with a basketball arena to help with east coast recruiting to build the BB powerhouse they have today. Syracuse is a charter member and is tied at the hip to St. Johns, Nova, and G'town for big bucks and is not walking away from that winter golden goose that draws fans and money in conference play. Rutgers has always been a follower and not a leader so with their NE counterparts holding the line they are not in any hurry to leave either until that B-10 offer comes along - if it ever comes along. So if you want to blame anyone you have to blame the Catholic schools, the Northeastern Four Football Schools, and all of the college presidents for keeping this very conservative league together. Don't bite the hand that feeds you aka basketball while attempting to build your football conference which is a young conference everytime something does not work out exactly like you had hoped for or expected it to turn out. The football schools need to expand their stadiums to the size of the other BCS conferences where they can at Rutgers, UConn, Lville, and WV, and build larger traveling fan bases that spend money in bowl cities while enjoying the BB cash cow. There is a lot of growth potential in this league for football but the football schools have to grow on their own rather than sitting back with some people that want to blame everything that goes wrong in this league on their Catholic brethern and the Providence Commisioners. The door was opened twice and they didn't walk so all is not so dark, bleak, or gloomy in BE Land.

On Marinatto the jury is out. You can't condemn him for loosing any bowls if the conference as a whole did not want to continue with the current deals. The Gator was done especially after Catlett started shooting his mouth off in a negative way the past couple of years. Just call it as it is - a mutual divorce. The deal was sour on both sides. There are stiil other bowls to be had and over all if the BE can land something like the Music Bowl they will be further ahead. Do you want a bowl that you can go to 4 out of 4 years or 3 out of 4 years, or do you want a hybrid deal where the B-12 can take your place 2 out of 4 years and ND can take your place 2 out of 4 years. What is the sense of having a bowl agrrement for 2.5 million for number 2 in your league when you could potential be locked out of it all 4 years. In the end the commish can only get the bowls he can get for the conference based on past conference success on the football field at the bowls and based on how many FANS SHOW UP FROM THE CONFERENCE TO SPEND MONEY AT THE BOWLS.

04-cheers

Something tells me that the 15 other non-Providence schools did not get together and say "Gee, let's vote based on what is best for Providence!".

Only other explanation has to be that the other 15 schools didn't want to fork out the $20,000 moving costs if they found a TOP Commish candidate that could do wonders for both the FOOTBALL and BASKETBALL Programs.

Its obvious that for the last 2 times the Big East had a Commish job open...they only accepted one's resume in a 10 square mile block from the Big East home office.

PS. Look at the SEC...they find the best candidate from even a NON-BCS Conf...and that commish helps the SEC "explode"...and that Commish (from a NON-BCS Conf) helped the SEC secure a $3 Billion TV deal.

Imagine that...SEC hired the "best person for the job"...not "who lives close to the home office?"

The bottom line is it is all about perception and not reality.....Miami and Fl State just sounds and sells better than USF, UCONN, Louisville. This not a knock on my part against USF, UCONN, or Lousville but just an example. You would have to say that these teams have been better than Fl State and Miaimi over the last 5 years but it is all about name recognition when it comes to TV contracts and Bowls.

Go Sports and Panite, outstanding posts 04-bow It takes two to make this situation: the people who run the league, and the schools who approve of it. And, the simple act of splitting, in itself, won't all the sudden improve BE football.
