Can't wait for the Cash for Clunkers program to end.
I want to buy a new car and can't wait for it to end. I don't want to get an extra $4500 from the government to buy a car.

Many things wrong with this program.

1. Prior to the start date, many people who were going to buy cars waited until the program began.
2. This program will only speed up purchases of new cars and when the program ends, sales of new cars will drop off the table.
3. Only people with good credit can get NEW cars. To qualify, you will need a decent FICO score.
4. Lower income people will not be as likely to take advantage of this Clunker program.
5. The "clunkers" will be destroyed thus reducing the number of low end cars available to those not making a lot of money.
6. People will be taking out debt to buy new cars. There old cars are paid off.

All this progam did was to cause people to wait till the program started to buy a new car then after the program ends, sales will drop off.

Yes, sales of new cars will be huge for July and August but what about September, October and future months, people won't be buying. I bet most people were planning on buying a new car anyway and waited till they got the rebate.

1. Very true.
2. People could hold off on buying their new cars until later in the year when the newer models come out.
3. Who's to say they won't buy a used car instead of a new one?
4. Lower-income people could be the ones to take advantage because this would be the only way to get enough $ for a suitable new or used car.
5. I doubt the number of used cars would decrease that substantially.
6. Not necesarily. Places like Carmax that specialize in selling used cars at low prices are an alternative to taking out large amounts of debt on new cars.

We as a nation could do nothing to attempt to right the ship and watch & wait for the ship to try to remain afloat a few more years, or try different things to get the ship to drydock before sinking and , thereby, keeping or getting American people working, spending and believing in the future.

The hole torn in the financial side of USS Enterprise could not repair or regenerate itself without some forms of life support.

It's alot easier to say why various fixes won't work. It's much harder to offer alternatives which will work better.

There simply are no good fixes without alot of pain and undesireable side effects from the meds required to keep the patient alive and well enough to recover from the most serious financial illness since Great Depression.

... Pain & time....there is NO other way...... our inability to accept pain in 99,00,01..that has made the problems much worse than they should have been. 95% of everything the political class has done or is doing is just a facade pretending they are your friend and can help us at the same time trying to justify their jobs.

Good come back. Did you think of this all by yourself? I am impressed.

Also, I don't listen to Limbaugh. I just know that debt got us into this mess and the government wants to pile on more debt.

nice to be so idealistic...i know if I were buying a car, i'd fully take advantage of this. That $4500 rebate can go to better things such as for family, child's college, etc. Gotta look out for #1

We also all know that Klake isn't getting a new car since he just recently bought his mid life crisis Mustang.

What a surprise Klake is spouting off more conservative propoganda. A stimulus that costs pennies compared to most programs, and it's working. The entire idea of a "stimulus" is to create a market and to get people to start buying things. If you don't like this program you're just blind, I don't know what else to say.
3 billion dollars is nothing over all, compared to what most government programs cost and it's clearly working. This may be one of the best examples of all time, of how government spending can help the general public, it's working that well.

I hate to see your personal finances. you must have debt up the @$$. Filing for bankruptcy any time soon. Our government can not spend money it does not have. What part of this can you not comprehend. California is close to going bankrupt. So are many other states. The don't have the funds to pay for their current expenditures let alone long term debt. If you need credit counseling, I am available.

I am not handing out money. I will help you create a budget to live within your means. Last Friday, Tim Gietner asked congress to raise the debt level again. It is at 12 trillion dollars. It was last raised in February. What is the plan to pay this debt off?

Bueller? Bueller?

Exactly... it's trillions of dollars and here you are worried about a measly couple billion that is clearly stimulating the economy, leading to jobs, leading to tax dollars, leading to debt being paid off...

There is no indication it is stimulating anything. It is providing a temporary blip, moving car sales from other months into these months. We'll see how the annual sales numbers come in.

Not sure how taking on government debt, and personal debt (to buy a car) is helping pay down debt.

Plus, it is going to have a detrimental effect on the used car market, which is where those without copious amounts of money tend to buy their vehicles.

Not to mention, it is a tremendously wasteful, environmentally speaking, program.

The program is the real clunker.

Exactly. It is a temporary benefit to car dealers. If I am a production guy, I don't crank up production because we sold some cars. After this program goes away, sales of autos will be piss poor. All this did is remove inventory from dealers.

There simply are no good fixes without alot of pain and undesireable side effects from the meds required to keep the patient alive and well enough to recover from the most serious financial illness since Great Depression.

A very simple solution was offered by some Republicans and it was totally ignored by the Dems - and the media alike.

No federal taxes for 1 year - this would have cost $1 Trillion - which is just over the terrible stimulus package that still has barely got money into the economy.

This would have had an IMMEDIATE impact and people would have seen there take home pay increase drmatically; increased consumer confidence; and had people out buying again.

So your "no good fixes" is BS - it just isn't something BO wanted.
