CHICAGO -- Former ODU righthanded pitcher Dexter Carter (Murfreesboro, NC./Greenbrier Christian HS) was traded along wth three other pitchers by the Chicago White Sox for right-handed pitcher Jake Peavy of the San Diego Padres on Friday.

The three other pitchers included in the trade were left-handers Aaron Poreda and Clayton Richard and right-hander and Adam Russell.

Carter was pitching for Kannapolis a Class A team for the White Sox. He is currently 6-2 with a 3.13 earned run average with 143 strikeouts in just 103 innings. He walked only 30 batters in 19 starts.

Peavy was 6-6 with a 3.97 ERA and 92 strikeouts in 13 starts this season with the Padres. Peavy, the 2007 National League Cy Young Award winner, has been on the disabled list since June 13 with a strained tendon in his right ankle. At the time he went on the disabled list, Peavy ranked among the NL leaders in starts (tied for first), strikeouts (third) and opponents batting average (eighth, .228). He is expected to be able to return as early as late August.

Richard, the only player who was on the White Sox Major League roster, was 4-3 with a 4.65 ERA in 26 games (14 starts) this season and had been scheduled to start Friday night's game against the Yankees at U.S. Cellular Field.

Poreda, 22, is 3-4 with a 2.72 ERA between Triple-A Charlotte and Double-A Birmingham. His contract was purchased from Birmingham on June 9, and he went 1-0 with a 2.45 ERA in 10 relief appearances with the White Sox before being optioned to Charlotte on July 21.

Russell, 26, is 2-2 with a 3.20 ERA and five saves in 34 relief appearances this season with Charlotte. He went 4-0 with a 5.19 ERA in 22 relief appearances with the White Sox in 2008.
