NEW rule getting seriously considered by the NCAA
The Big 10/11 + the Pac 10 are unhappy that they're going unnoticed from the end of their regular season until bowl selection time, while the SEC, Big 12 & ACC have conference championships seen nationwide. Soon the NCAA will require conferences have to 12 football playing members. The consensus is:

Big 10/11 adds Notre Dame
Pac 10 adds Utah & BYU
BE adds Memphis, UCF, ECU and Marshall

8 team playoff to start which would morph into a 16 team playoff the first time a SEC team gets "screwed"...

How would the SEC get screwed? You don't think there are ever any times when the SEC's top two could run the gamut through the Big-10 or CUSA?

You're not going to please everyone all of the time. Soon the MAC will be bitching. Then the MWC. ..and why would USM be left out?

...and if the PAC 10 and Big Televen are unhappy because they go unnoticed then they need to take it upon themselves to add an additional member(s) to have a conference championship. The BCS would really be overstepping it's bounds to require them to do it. This is up to those two conferences.

I don't think the SEC would be allowed by the polls to have both the #1 & #2 rated teams & play for the Mythical National Championship, even though the 2 (maybe even 3) best teams could very well be from the SEC. That's where my "getting screwed" comment comes in. What I really see is the SEC leaving all the other conferences in the dust & soon - witness the new TV contract that was just signed.

Sure the Pac 10 & Big 10/11 can add teams if they so choose. Where would USM go? They're certainly more deserving than Marshall of playing in an AQ conference.
