The International Federation of American Football was formed in 1998 by founding nations Australia, Finland, France, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Korea, Mexico, Sweden and Spain. By 2008 IFAF membership had increased to a total of 52 countries governed by five continental federations.

American Football has been played internationally since the late 1800s in countries such as Canada and the United States and can trace its roots in Japan back to the 1930s. The game gained popularity in Europe in the 1970s and gathered pace in the 1980s when sports enthusiasts were gripped by a surge in interest in both watching football on television and participating on the gridiron.

A record number of 35 countries were represented at the 12th annual International Federation of American Football (IFAF) Congress held in Canton, Ohio, in conjunction with the inaugural IFAF Junior World Championship.

While the United States, Canada and Japan were winning the tournament gold, silver and bronze medals respectively, IFAF membership continued to expand around the world. Seven countries - Bulgaria, Chile, Colombia, Croatia, Nicaragua, Paraguay and Venezuela - were granted full membership of IFAF.

"We are delighted to welcome these new and emerging federations of American football from Pan-American and Europe into the IFAF family," said IFAF President TOMMY WIKING. "The sport continues push its border internationally and by becoming IFAF members, these countries can benefit from a wealth of resources available through IFAF and also by communicating with fellow federations.

"Last year in Spain, 28 nations attended the IFAF Congress and this year's attendance illustrates how we are not only expanding but are also joining forces effectively to develop the sport."

USA Football is an independent non-profit organization leading the development of youth, high school, and international amateur football. In its role as the national governing body of America's favorite sport, USA Football provides programs and resources inspiring participation and further strengthening the quality of the game. USA Football was endowed by the NFL and NFL Players Association in 2002.

Growing the game of American Football in North, South and Central America and the Caribbean is the stated mission of the new Pan-American Federation of American Football (PAFAF).

The Federation was founded at a meeting between representatives of football organizations from the United States, Canada, Mexico, Guatemala, Panama, Argentina, and Uruguay in Miami on January 30, 2007.

“We made history in January by creating PAFAF as we support, and in times lead, the development of American Football internationally,” Scott Hallenbeck said. “It’s an honor to serve as the first president of PAFAF and lead such a passionate and committed group of national federation representatives, who enthusiastically pursue growing American Football in their countries.”

Four of the seven charter members of PAFAF (United States, Canada, Mexico and Guatemala) are already members of the nine year-old International Federation of American Football (IFAF), which was formed in 1998 with the expressed purpose of promoting the development of American Football worldwide. PAFAF will be the Pan-America Continental representative to IFAF.

The creation of the Pan-American Federation of American Football is further proof of the fast global growth of American Football,” said Tommy Wiking of Sweden, President of the International Federation of American Football (IFAF). “IFAF will continue its work to spread football.”

Among the issues PAFAF’s charter members discussed in the formation meeting were the organization’s statutes, election of officers and plans for growing the sport in the Western hemisphere.

Delegates from the seven countries elected Scott Hallenbeck of USA Football the first president of PAFAF. Jorge Orobio Rojas of Mexico, Marco Cobar of Guatemala, Guillermo Suarez of Panama and Fernando Rodriguez of Uruguay were also elected to the Board of Directors. PAFAF operations will be run out of the USA Football office in Vienna, Va.

PAFAF Congress Adds Three Members

PANAMA CITY, PANAMA -The addition of three new members and a commitment to youth (15 and under) and junior (19 and under) development were the key accomplishments of the Pan-American Federation of American Football (PAFAF) Congress held on May 9 in Panama City.

Six of the seven founding members of the confederation - Argentina, Guatemala, Mexico, Panama, the United States and Uruguay -were represented at the Congress. The seventh PAFAF member, Canada, was unable to attend.

Guests of the Congress included International Federation of American Football president Tommy Wiking, NFL International's Kathryn Kelly and American Football Coaches Association spokesman Todd Bell.

The Congress heard presentations from three prospective members - the Bahamas, Brazil and the Dominican Republic - before voting unanimously to accept all three as members of PAFAF.

The primary topic of discussion at the Congress was the development of youth and junior football throughout the Americas. PAFAF members agreed unanimously to focus their efforts over the next year on creating and expanding youth and junior flag football in their respective countries.

"The 2008 PAFAF Congress was a great success with productive discussion and a commitment to growing our great game at the youth and junior levels. We agreed that developing the game below the senior level is necessary to sustain the growth of football in the Americas," said PAFAF President Scott Hallenbeck.

The Congress host, the Panamanian Federation of American Football (PFAF), was presented as a model for developing federations to follow. Panama currently offers flag and contact leagues for ages 8 and older.

Panama's plan for growth includes the construction of a 5,000-seat football-only stadium in Panama City that will serve as the home base for the federation and has the potential to become a center for regional PAFAF competitions, clinics and training.

"The Panamanian Federation of American Football did a tremendous job of hosting the PAFAF Congress and we look forward to supporting their continued efforts to expand American football in Panama and Latin America," Hallenbeck added.

The International Federation of American Football (IFAF) held its 13th annual Congress in Sydney, Australia from Thursday, April 8 to Saturday, April 10.

American Samoa and the Cayman Islands were welcomed as new IFAF members taking the total number of countries playing some form of the sport around the world and represented by IFAF to 59. American Samoa has several players currently on NFL rosters and in January, three players from the island represented the World team, playing against USA Football’s Team USA in South Florida.

USA wins IFAF World Championship

The United States won the first IFAF Women's World Championship gold medal July 3 with a 66-0 victory over Canada at the Zinkensdamms IP Stadium in Stockholm, Sweden.

Earlier in the day, Finland won the Bronze medal with a 26-18 win over Germany, while on a good day for Scandinavia, host Sweden took fifth place overall by beating Austria 20-18.

USA Football’s Women’s National Team head coach John Konecki said afterwards, "Canada was an excellent team and we had to work hard to prepare and play against them. I feel honored to have coached Team USA. It is a remarkable group of women."

The “Team USA vs. The World” game, an annual international friendly matching USA Football’s Under-19 National Team against a “World Select” team, will be played in Austin, Texas, in 2011.

"Team USA vs. The World" is an annual international friendly matching USA Football's Under-19 National Team - composed of graduating high school seniors - against a "World Select" team spanning as many as four continents. Both teams will field a 45-player roster

The "Team USA vs. The World" series kicked off this past January in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., where Team USA earned a 17-0 victory.

CANADA WELCOMES FIFTH IFAF FLAG FOOTBALL WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP


The world's best female and male flag football players will converge on Ottawa, the capital city of Canada, from August 11 to August 15 for the fifth biannual International Federation of American Football (IFAF) Flag Football World Championship.
The IFAF Flag Football World Championship has been held since 2002 and is the showpiece biannual tournament for senior national teams competing in 5-on-5 flag football and has separate competitions for men and women.
Football Canada, the National Governing Body of Canadian Amateur Football, which represents tackle, touch and flag components including players, coaches, officials and administrators, will host the IFAF FFWC for the second time.

USA FOOTBALL SELECTS 2011 U.S. UNDER-19 NATIONAL TEAM PLAYERS AND COACHES

High school football players and coaches from 21 states and Washington, D.C., have been selected to play for the 2011 U.S. Under-19 National Team, assembled by USA Football. The U.S. team will compete Feb. 2 in Austin, Texas, against a team composed of 45 of the best players age 19 and under from outside of the United States spanning four continents in the second Team USA vs. The World game.

Forty-five American high school seniors and 13 high school football coaches from across the country will represent the U.S. in the game to be held on National Signing Day. Team USA’s roster presently stands at 42 athletes with the remaining three roster spots to be announced soon.

A national team exemption granted by the NCAA allows high school seniors to play for USA Football and not have their participation count as one of their two permitted all-star game appearances. Team USA vs. The World is recognized as a national team competition.

Austria 2011: Eight Nations, one goal
In the upcoming summer Australia, Germany, France, Mexico, Canada, Japan or South Korea, defending champion USA and Austria will compete for the title of World Champion in Graz, Innsbruck and Vienna.

"Never before has there been a bigger World Championship. We play in the biggest stadiums, for the best fans. This is the first time that all the top nations in international American Football are coming together to play in the same tournament," says Michael Eschlböck, president of the American Football Bund Österreich (The Austrian American Football Association). Two touchdowns by Joe Bergeron leads Americans to victory

A tough struggle on an unseasonably cold night greeted the U.S. Under-19 National team Feb. 2 in Austin, Texas.

The outcome was the same as Team USA improved to 5-0 in international play, but this one went right down to the wire. The Americans won, 21-14, in the second annual Team USA vs. The World at Westlake High School’s Chaparral Stadium.

Representatives of the International Federation of American Football will visit China next week to discuss the development of American football in three cities.

IFAF President TOMMY WIKING, IFAF Treasurer and USA Football Executive Director SCOTT HALLENBECK and IFAF Senior Vice President and President of AFAF DR K.K. PARK from the Korean federation will visit Beijing, Wuhu, and Shanghai. They will communicate with the American Football community in China, and meet with industry and government leaders to promote the development of the sport in China.

The trip coincides with the first collegiate American Football training camp ever held in China, which will consist of two days of training at the Wuhu Olympic Stadium where student athletes and local sports trainers will learn the foundations of the game on and off the field.

2012 INTERNATIONAL BOWL 35-29


The IFAF World Team won a thrilling 2012 International Bowl 35-29 despite a rousing U.S. Under-19 National Team comeback that fell just short in the fourth quarter.

The game marked the first loss in international competition at the senior or junior level by Team USA, including the 2007 and 2011 IFAF Senior World championships, the 2009 U-19 IFAF World Championship and two previous International Bowls.

University of Manitoba runningback Anthony Coombs rushed for a game-high 147 yards and two touchdowns and Burlington (Canada) Nelson High School quarterback Will Finch completed 11-of-14 passes for 169 yards and a pair of scores to lead the World team to the victory.

As the historic Italian capital city of Rome marked its 2,765th birthday, Team Stars & Stripes celebrated with a 50-0 victory over the country’s Under 19 national team.

The 20 schools represented on the Team Stars & Stripes roster are Villa Angela St Joseph (Cleveland, OH), Canyon Del Oro, Catalina Foothills, Film School of LA, Ironwood Ridge High, Rincon High, Sabino High, Tucson High (all Tucson, AZ), Father Judge, Cardinal O'Hara, Episcopal Academy, Malvern Prep, William Penn Charter (all Philadelphia, PA), Cathedral Prep (Erie, PA), Winneconne High (WI), Somerset High (WI), Brodhead Juda High (WI), Loyal High (WI), Carrol High (Ozark, AL), and Vero Beach High (FL).

Team Stars & Stripes arrived in Rome on April 15 and mixed practice sessions with cultural sightseeing including the spectacular sights of the picturesque spa town of Montecantini Terme, where the team practiced. They visited Florence, set in the rolling hills of Tuscany, Rome via the Basilica of St Francis of Assisi, Ancient Rome and the Coliseum and finally The Vatican

Led by veteran head coach Jeff Scurran, the American all-star team drawn from 20 high schools across eight states, had too much firepower in the air and dominated defensively at the Via dei Campi Sportivi in Rome.
