RICHMOND, Va. – The Major League Soccer season is in full swing and former Virginia Commonwealth University players Gonzalo Segares, Dominic Oduro and Andrew Dykstra are providing valuable depth for their respective clubs.
Segares has been in the starting 11 for head coach Denis Hamlett in Chicago on five occasions this season. The defender scored his first goal of the year in the 88th minute on Saturday to give the Fire a 2-2 tie and remain unbeaten. He has also registered an assist in 450 minutes on the pitch this season.
A third round selection by Chicago in the 2005 MLS SuperDraft, Segares started 23 games for the Fire last year and finished with two goals and a pair of assists.
While playing for the Rams, he was a first team All-America selection and received Colonial Athletic Association Defender of the Year honors following his sophomore and senior campaigns.
Meanwhile, Oduro, who was traded to New York prior to the start of the MLS season in mid-March, spent the previous three years with league rival FC Dallas.
The forward has played in three games with one start this season for the Red Bulls and has taken five shots with two shots on goal thus far.
Oduro earned 2004 CAA Player of the Year honors and received third team All-American recognition while donning a Rams’ uniform.
Dykstra, who has yet to appear in a match this season in his rookie campaign, finds himself providing depth for Chicago behind seven-year veteran goalie Jon Busch.
The MLS season continues to heat up this week as all three players will be in action on Wednesday. Chicago faces Club America in an International Friendly match, while New York will make a cross-country trip to face the San Jose Earthquakes.
