ESPNU owes the WAC 5 more games
Is ESPNU delaying to see if their distribution reaches 50 million?

Per the WAC contract, IF ESPNU's distribution is under 50 million, the WAC plays on Saturdays only.

Sure wish the WAC contract read 75 million. It's very possible ESPNU's distribution reaches 50 million prior to the start of the season.

Am I missing something? How is playing on Saturday only bad? Most leagues don't want/like the odd (Su/M/T/W/F) games (Thurs is now acceptable to most).

I'm with you.

The WAC plays enough games on weeknights.

I guess my point is, with ESPNU "waiting" to schedule those 5 games, they could hit the 50 million household mark before the start of the season. Hence, the contract allows them to schedule those 5 games on weeknights.

If the games were scheduled now, with their distribution being at 46 million, those games would have to be played on Saturday.

I think ESPNU is delaying for their benefit.

I don't think they would move any games to weeknights so close to the start of the season.

Now if they get 50 million before next year, it could happen. Probably Thursday night games on ESPNU. I'm told that Hawai'i home games will stay on Saturdays if they aren't selected for ESPN/ESPN2.

BTW, looks like the 2010 home game vs. USC will be a Thursday night game on ESPN.

It might help here if you would provide a link to the (apparent) story that you are referring to here. As it is what you wrote here is extremely difficult to comprehend or understand. Frankly I have no clue what you are referring to here.

I don't know if there is a text link, but during the announcement about the new ESPN contract last year, Karl Benson did state that all ESPNU games would remain on Saturdays. I don't know if there was something else that was stated where ESPNU could have WAC games on weeknights if the channel reached a certain number or homes.

Thanks for the info Mattsarz.

Didn't hear about Hawaii playing ESPNU games on Saturdays only, nor did I hear about the USC game being played on a Thursday.

Is the USC vs. UH game already slated for ESPN?

I completely misunderstood your initial post. I thought it said that if ESPNU was over 50 million, then it triggered Saturday only games.

I'm expecting all ESPNU WAC game to be late evening on the east coast, primetime on the west coast because of the SEC weekly primetime game on ESPNU. ESPNU has the 9/5 and 9/19 late evening slots scheduled with HBCU tape delayed games. So any games from 9/26 going forward should be available for ESPNU.
