RE: Thad Matta
As far as I'm concerned, coaches shouldn't be allowed to do that. It's one thing if it's academic or legal issues, but this happened solely because OSU thinks they should get someone else now. I hope it blows up in his face.

RE: Thad Matta
These coaches are making so much money these days and the expectations are so high, the false belief that college sports is amateur and mostly pure is totally gone now.
We parted ways with a commit ourselves did we not?
Edit: Article says OSU is close to losing a schollie due to academic shortcomings. I didn't realize that. What's the scoop?

RE: Thad Matta
I believe this scholarship is going to JD Weatherspoon from up North. He played with Jared Sullinger and they are very good friends. Weatherspoon had originally given XU a verbal commitment. He had a great season and was going to ask out of the XU deal regardless of if Sean Miller stayed or left. I am pretty sure he ends up at OSU. Matta was all over him to open his recruitment, that is what I was told in January. Matta is very shady but very good at making people think it is for the best.
I wonder if this guy is very good and if UC could use him. I think they need two big men and a PG next year. If they PG does not sign this year.

Duh. Can't really blame Matta for this, esp since we won't know what really transpired (since he's not allowed to comment, which I don't get). I don't know how recruiting works, but if the dude hadn't recieved a phone call from them, even if he was promised one, every so months, then he should assume all is well- as they'd call if they'd inform him that his scholly offer was revoked. He sounds like a scorned lover.

It may be because of all the guys leaving early if they didn't leave in good academic standing - which may be possible partly because OSU is a quarter school and the spring qtr would have started before they declared, so they would have been enrolled. I'm guessing they left to prepare for the draft before the quarter was over and didn't complete an academic year or let their spring qtr grades go to hell.

Thought maybe the difference here was the level in which the kid was getting played...not getting his ride taken away, but not being stroked regularly either...
Seems that Thad was using the kid as a safety net of sorts, dragging the process out, hoping something happens like Miller leaving so he can steal the kid from X. If that doesn't work out, he still has the original kid.
Maybe I am just getting old, but I find this whole thing distasteful, no matter who does or doesn't do it.
The kid is the smartest one in the whole thing, calling it is a "business" in the end.
Yup...

RE: Thad Matta
Times have changed, coaches can take a chance and then cut bait. Gone are the times of a player developing over the 4-5 years. You better be close or you need to transfer to juco, small college, etc. But it goes both ways, players are transferring up from manhatten, and other small schools left and right. Kids need to understand that the commitment is small on both sides, its strictly a 1 year commitment, year at a time.

I'm pretty sure this is a big problem. I think I read an article about how Oden leaving before the quarter was over was going to hurt OSU a couple of years ago and I doubt that's a rare occurance for students leaving early (considering they have virtually the entire spring quarter left).
Not that it's related, but OSU is switching to semesters in a couple of years.
