Maybe, maybe not, but likely, the BE will still be better than the acc, most years.
ok, lets do the math
take Villanova out of the mix, how many Big East and ACC teams in the final four?
better to stay good at one thing than average at both

Taking Nova out of the mix, the BE still would have gotten 4 teams in the Sweet 16 and 3 teams in the Elite 8, and would still have earned more ncaa units than any other league this season. Not to mention if Memphis was to be invited, we still would have gotten 5 into the Sweet 16. And there would still be discussion of the greatest conference ever.

Not to mention Syracuse would have gotten the 3 seed in the East and whooped a$$ on the Dukies as well.
Cheers,

RE: BE B-ball the best! But BE football .......
The BE will remain together until the new TV contract is up. The conference has been very successful again this year in BB which is its strength and FB is moving along successfully again after realignment with the retention of the BCS spot. If the FB schools don't announce that they are not splitting in the next few months after the NCAA tournament then it is a safe bet that the get out of jail free card has been extended until the end of the new TV contract.
The new bowl contracts are being negotiated, and a FB only, or an all sports school will be added to address the FB scheduling problems when the time is right. That issue won't be addressed unless pressure is put on by the BCS schools to increase the number of league games bringing them up to 8 to equal the rest of the BCS schools. As far as the BSC bid is concerned the BE is meeting the requirements and has a BCS vote from ND to keep that status quo so as not to ruin the set up they currently have. The BE would only need to review their situation every 5 years with both sides having the get out of jail free card based on the needs of the FB faction and their need to meet the requirements of the BCS as long as it is around that might require FB expansion to 12 teams for a future play off system. That is not happening as long as the B-10 and PAC-10 refuse to expand beyond their current configuration. The only other threat to the BE at this time is the potential loss of Cuse or Rutgers to B-10 expansion if ND does not grab that final slot first. If the BE looses Cuse or Rutgers then they will just be replaced by another all sports school with strong FB and great BB. I just don't see the BE splitting at this time especially with another Providence BB man in charge when Tranghese retires in June.

To me the addition of Marquette and DePaul was a sign that both sides figured a split would come sooner or later.
I think you are right on there.. the current reality is the school prez have gotten comfortable with the current make up .. and wont be doing anything any time soon.

RE: BE B-ball the best! But BE football .......
The solution is very simple. I have said this dozens if not hundreds of times. We can keep the great basketball juggernaut together and still fix the football scheduling problem. Just add one more team for football and one more team for basketball. This gives us a perfect 9-team league in football with a balanced 4/4 home/away schedule and we can keep an 18-game basketball schedule with only one opponent being repeated, rather than three, which would be much more fair to all of the teams.
Going to 10 schools in football is unnecessary and going to 12 schools in football would be a disaster of ACC proportions. Actually it would be worse. We only need 9 schools in football. There is no reason to go beyond that number just for the sake of saying something happened. Clearly the oversized 16-team hybrid monstrosity has some merits in basketball and that was on full display this season. I see little difference between 16 and 18 but can certainly envision us having the best of both worlds.
