Here is a reply from Stan on this:
My email isn't as colorful as Ron's!
(Thanks, Ron, for caring about the program! )
FIU actually has cheer AND dance. (
http://www.fiusports.com). Most colleges have both programs because they serve 2 very different purposes. Cheerleaders grow up training stunts and tumbling; dancers study different styles of dance. Having both also involves more students AND keeps our crazy kids out of trouble!
Even in our state, many of the colleges have multiple spirit teams:
ASU - 2 cheer teams and 1 dance team
UCA - 2 cheer teams and 1 dance team.
U of A - 2 cheer teams and 2 dance teams.
UAPB, ATU, and UAFS all have 1 cheer and 1 dance team.
Kerry, I'm sorry you were disappointed in the team's ability this year. It definitely had challenges.
1. We had several injuries - and no alternates.
2. You mentioned 6 guys-6 girls. We have tried that in the past could never keep that many guys on board.
3. My kids were made to dance, and they aren't dancers. It'd be like asking the Trojans in Motion to build a pyramid.
4. The rules for college cheerleading on the wood floor are more strict than junior high rules.
Like Ron said, we are very proud to be currently ranked 6th in the nation, but you guys never got to see any of our fancy skills - because of the wood floor. You may see our nationals performance on Youtube - just search "UALR Cheer." Here's the top 6 (there were 20 teams total): 1. Louisville, 2. Southern Methodist, 3. Clemson, 4. Oklahoma State, 5. University of TX at Arlington, and 6. UALR!
I agree with Ron. I think getting rid of the band and/or cheer is stepping away from providing UALR students with a sense of campus life. I think it will also affect crowd participation at games. Just as cheerleaders aren't trained to dance, dancers aren't trained to lead cheers.
Last thing... I am also concerned about a fall tryout for either type team. Only the super-small colleges in the state have fall tryouts (Philandersmith and Hendrix for instance). I've coached cheerleading in AR for 21 years, and I'm afraid most talented cheerleaders (or dancers) will be turned off by the fall tryout and seek another program.
I've had a blast coaching at UALR, and I'll miss it! Like Ron says, GO TROJANS GO!!!!

Re: No more cheerleaders ?????????? Maybe, maybe not !!
I like the idea of doing away with the pep band and the cheerleaders. We tend to play canned music at the time outs that just leaves the pep band watching. I would not want to put in the time to be in the band to have canned music played most of the time. So, no pep band means we need to get rid of the cheer leaders and get a dance team like FIU. The dance team will have no problem dancing to canned music.
The truth be told, the cheer leaders were really bad. If we are going to have cheer leaders do it right. Get 6 guys that can lift and 6 girls that can stunt. If we can do that, don't have them. We can find 8 or 9 girls that are easy on the eyes that can dance, imo.
