Reason to worry
North Texas returns all five starters next year from a 20-win team.

If we are picked higher than 5th in the West, I'll be very surprised.

I certainly haven't studied it, but your probably right. UNT, Denver, ULL, and probably ASU will be picked ahead of us. Sure doesn't mean that's how it will end up, but based on who's coming back and recruiting rankings (ASU was in the Midmajor Top 25 based on their early signings) it seems like a fair prediction.
