The market has dropped. It used to be #101 and even larger than that.

Old thread but still relevant today. Someone who knows local sports and is willing to discuss it should be a must, especially at the 3 o'clock time slot. Please consider a co-host or turning the reigns over to someone else. I would love a great sports show, but find myself listening to the Savage Nation on 910 more and more at 3.

I guess the perceptions that Tennessee ends at Knoxville and Virginia ends at Roanoke are reality.

RE: Sports Monster
No self-respecting sports fan could tolerate Bill for a single segment. It's not a personal vendetta against the guy. Rather, he simply does not know sports, and is over his skis the moment the on-air light goes on.

Local sports is supposed to be sub-par, we all get it. But I get better analysis by walking down the hallway and talking to Bucfaithful.

It's super EASY to end the frustration with Bill's show: flip over to ESPN. I'd rather hear national sports done in excellence than local sports done inanely.

The only time I listen to the local station any more is to hear Don Helman on Saturdays which is by far the best radio guy in the area and the Morning Monster unless Bill Meade is filling in for one of the regular guys. I agree that Bill is not just a poor radio host, he doesn't know sports outside the Celtics, NASCAR, and UT. Just all around terrible radio show.

Don Helman? lmao Don sucks more then Bill, they took his morning show away from him and stuck him on the weekends.

Bobby Radar (with Bud and Kenny taking turns as a co-host) is by far the best radio host in this area. He schedules several interesting interviews, gets some pretty good names, (had Ray Evernham on Friday to talk about Jeff Gordon retiring). He has a Bartow on once a week to talk about basketball, He used to have Kemp on I assume he has the new coach on as well. During football season he has the radio announcer of whatever team Tennessee is playing that week on, he has the announcer for Va Tech on to talk once a week, The Tennessee announcer to talk once week, a guy from 247 to talk about Tennessee football recruiting. A guy from Bristol Motor Speedway calls in every Monday during racing season to talk about that sport. Before someone starts in he covers to much Tennessee and Va Tech, He does cover ETSU stuff BUT Va Tech and Tennessee are very important to this area and he would be an idiot to ignore them. He gets several other good guests on each week. Hell even when he is filling in for Bill on the 3pm show he has guests something Bill never does.

Moving Don Helman to the weekends was the worst mistake the station ever did. He is much better than Bill and will actually talk about local teams like ETSU even when he doesn't have a guest from that program on. If you notice, Don gets calls during his show while Bill just talks to himself and goes hours with no calls. Only the same 2-3 people ever call Bill's show.

Don never had the afternoon show, Bill has always taken that slot for himself going back to when it was on WJCW. So we really aren't comparing Don to Bill. But in the morning comparing Don to Bobby (who took over Don's time slot) Bobby is 100x better. Maybe move Bobby to the afternoon show and let Don have the morning but Don was always dull as dishwater to me. I could never listen to him, I was afraid it would put me to sleep that early in the morning.

Don used to cover for Bill in the afternoon before Bobby came along. Don got/took calls, Bill just talked and talked, etc. On another note, the main reason I listen to them is for the traffic updates. I need to know if there are issues on I-26, State of Franklin, etc.

Yeah Don would cover for Bill just like now Bobby covers for Bill in the afternoon and Bill covers for Bobby in the morning. I like Bobby in the morning it has the feel of a real sports show, and I prefer it when he is teamed up with Bud instead of Kenny.

That morning deal needs a third, someone local who has played something professionally but is younger. The Cumulus format seems to be successful with three person teams, a host, someone who's covered various sports, and an ex athlete (Doc, Jeff, and Heather notwithstanding, that show should be called the three putz'). Bill needs to hang it up. His show is terrible. I listened to it about a month ago, I wanted to stab my ears. Caller driven has only sort of worked in one place, and even it was more caller friendly than driven (Paul Finebaum). For some reason, that's what Bill thinks he is. If they took that timeslot and inserted personalities like Kasey Marler (Yes, I know he does news now), Jay, and a local name that people under the age of 50 know. Format a caller friendly show that focuses on NFL coverage, weekly call ins from people involved with the Titans, Falcons, Panthers, Redskins, and a national guy (John McClain from the Houston Chronicle is a great fit for this), have your Tennessee, SEC, Va. Tech ACC segments, and filter in ETSU as well, it would work. Most of all, have variety, have real information, not Gertbeef from Surgoinsville calling in to talk about the Volunteer/Cherokee basketball game.

Lover's post reminded, during the NFL season Bobby does have the play by play guy of the Titans call in each week, I forgot about him.

That's good. Mike Keith actually interviewed for the ETSU pbp job pre Titans. ETSU went with an alum. Mike Keith won broadcaster of the year in the NFL, again last year. Bobby should get Kuharsky from ESPN to do a segment along with others. Content is much better than hearing about Dobyns Bennett/Sullivan Central

Might be more then his schedule can handle, I know he has a regular spot each week and I assume that Ezell (Kemp did) does as well, I am usually not in the car during those spots, they are early.

No reason he can't do twice a week. Maybe the next coach will. Its obvious to me he can't manage a roster so I'm sure he can't manage time.

Murry should be on the morning after every game. There's no reason why he shouldn't be. I'll bet he had to do that @ UAB. Why should this be any different?

I doubt he did. WJOX in Birmingham is Bama/Auburn, then the SEC all day.
