Our New York City schools...
are once again horrible
Seton Hall 0-6 in BE play
Rutgers 0-6 in BE play
St Johns 1-5 in BE play
Its amazing that these schools can't find more success in what in many ways is the capital city of high school basketball...its something akin to Texas or UF struggling in football. Can you imagine the media play we would get if two of these schools were good? Why can't these schools get players?

St John's absolutely collapsed tonight. They were up 51-40 on Cincy with 13 minutes remaining. The Bearcats outscored them 31-9 to finish the game. The Jonnies were also 14 of 31 from the line.
These schools simply have not/do not have quality coaches. They let the rest of the league recruit out of their backyards. UofL, Pitt, UConn, and Nova for example have robbed them blind. They need a foundation of keeping a few local guys to get started.

I know St Johns at least is making an attempt to become more attractive to canidates. They are making some campus improvements, including dorms. SJU has always been a commuter school they are attempting to alter that somewhat.

The sad part is that many of the best players in the conference are from the NYC area, and none of 'em wanted to stay home and play. That says volumes about the reputation of our New York area colleges...

Ironically, St Johns stopped being a power AFTER they built their dorms:
NCAA rules permit schools to give their scholarship athletes a cash stipend to cover living expenses. If a school doesn't have dormitories, the amount of the stipend is calculated according to the cost of living in that school's neighborhood. Best of all, the NCAA allows schools to dispense the full amount regardless of what an athlete's actual living expenses are. That means a local player attending St. John's could either live at home and pocket the entire amount of the stipend, or he could bunk up with several of his teammates, pay well under the stipend amount in rent, and pocket the difference. For decades, this was St. Johns's dirty little secret -- only it wasn't really dirty because it was fully sanctioned by the NCAA.
