I read about a coach somewhere who was
given an extention of his contract to 2012, but there was no money guarantee. Isn't that sort of strange. He has a contract, but if they fire him, they don't have to pay him anything. Boy, I wonder who his agent is!03-puke03-puke03-puke03-puke03-puke

No it is not uncommon in mid-major and lower programs to do that. A mid-major cannot afford a buyout clause. A coach is given a contract extension just to help him recruit. A recruit will see the coach has a contract extension making the recruit think the coach will be throughout his playing career. Why commit to a school if you think the coach might get fired. I promise you Steve Shields has the same type of contract. UALR could fire Shields tomorrow and owe him only for this season.
