"Big Play Abe"
And that's a quote ! :ncaabbs:

Yet another Golden Flash straight from our football factory. How come we produce pro football players by the truckload but cannot produce a single winning season ???

I assume the question is rhetorical. But, Kent State has almost always had at least a couple really great, NFL material players on the roster, but rarely had enough solid players to fill all positions, and usually have not had much depth at all.

We have maybe a half a dozen guys in the NFL right now, give or take a couple? From the Hoke thread, SD St. has 20 and look at their record over the last decade.

The question was definitely rhetorical, although the point remains. 05-stirthepot

It's a good point, Dannyb73. I suppose when you get right down to it, they have recruited some outstanding players over the years, but not nearly enough solid players to win more than they lose.

RE: "Big Play Abe"
Tony Dungy believes that James Harrison should be the NFL MVP:

“To me, he does a lot,” Dungy said of Harrison. “He’s like Randy Moss or Dwight Freeney. You have to game plan for him in terms of how you’re going to block him in the passing game, so he puts that on the table even before the game starts. And then he does other things: He drops in pass coverage, he covers tight ends, you can move him around, and he’s not just a one-dimensional rusher. He’s a linebacker who also rushes, and he’s been the most dominant player on the best defense in football, and by next Sunday they might have the best record in football.”

Harrison was awesome at Kent State. I remember telling people when he signed with the Steelers that he would really help them some day (an understatement, as it turns out). Of course, since I was talking about a Kent State player, most just looked at me as if I told them I believed that JFK was shot by Bigfoot.

Of course, Kent State didn't produce Elam. They gave him a year to get his NFL stock up.

That being said, he was an important player in 2004, the season of missed opportunities.

RE: "Big Play Abe"
They went on a limb to take a chance on him, the NFL was probably furthest from his mind at that time and was just looking for a chance to play organized ball.
