This Article Says That B Kelly Gave ND The Cold Shoulder
CollegeFootballTalk.com's Michael David Smith believes Notre Dame athletic director Jack Swarbrick originally considered firing Charlie Weis before coming out Wednesday to say that Weis will return next season.

Swarbrick originally said he would wait until at least Dec. 8 to make an announcement, but he came forward five days sooner to say Weis would be back. Smith believes that Notre Dame was interested in hiring a coach whose season isn't over yet, and he was buying more time by setting Dec. 8 as the earliest date for an announcement. But, according to Smith, the coach that Notre Dame was interested in game the Irish the cold shoulder. Therefore, Notre Dame had no reason to wait to make an announcement.

So who was the mystery coach? Smith believes it was Cincinnati coach Brian Kelly, who came forward Tuesday to announce that he was committed to Cincinnati.

---

According to FootballRumorMill.com, Connecticut coach Randy Edsall and Oregon offensive coordinator Chip Kelly, who was recently named the successor to Mike Bellotti, are out of the job hunt at Syracuse. Two named that are starting to surface in that hunt, however, are Boise State coach Chris Petersen and Florida offensive coordinator Dan Mullen.

RE: This Article Says That B Kelly Gave ND The Cold Shoulder
The rumors out of South Bend are that the coaches approached who declined interest in the ND job at this time were Meyer, Gruden and Chris Peterson.

The ND folks claim that Kelly was approached and was interested but that ND was looking for a "big name" and not that sold on him. They felt that keeping Weis for at least next week was a better (and far cheaper) alternative to buying Weis out and hiring someone not named Meyer or Gruden.

Who knows? The bottom line is that Weis was retained. If he doesn't wine at least nine games next year, ND will be hiring a new coach.

ND folks also won't even fathom the idea that someone would actually want to coach at Cincinnati rather than ND

That's right Bearcatfan - who cares who said no to who??

Kelly has stated all along that he'd only engage discussions after the season, yet, most out there refuse to believe it.

I believe it. Kelly made it clear that he wouldn't talk to anyone until after the season was over. He also promised it to his players. He turned down Tennessee and Washington so why not Notre Dame? Either way, he's at UC and we're improving the facilities and expanding the stadium thanks to him and I love it!

At minimum he would have talked to them, CC. I hope the story is true, but I have a hard time believing it.

Do I think Kelly talked to Notre Dame in person? Probably not.
Do I think Kelly spoke to Notre via a proxy/agent? Probably
