Amstutz Out
May have already been posted

TOLEDO, OH - University of Toledo head football coach Tom Amstutz announced today that he will step down as head football coach at the end of this season and will assume a position with the University as the director of special projects in the Alumni Relations Office beginning in January.

The Rockets have four more games left to play this season, including Wednesday night’s contest at Akron. The season finale is Nov. 28 vs. Bowling Green at the Glass Bowl.

“I felt the time was right for me to announce that I will be passing the torch at the end of the season and moving on to some new challenges,” said Amstutz, 53, a UT alumnus who has spent almost 33 years at UT as a player, assistant coach and head coach. “I love the University of Toledo and have enjoyed my eight seasons as head football coach. I now look forward to continue serving UT in my new capacity in the Alumni Office.

RE: Amstutz Out
It could be a big off season for MAC ADs.

Toledo Tom - done,
EMU Genyk - probably done,
Montgomery @ MIA - ??????
and several coaches could get 'poached' by bigger schools. I can see Brady @ BSU, Butch at CMU, maybe Turner at UB, etc. (Golden and Kill are possible down the road too).

I put the new HC count for '09 as either 3 or 4.

RE: Amstutz Out
I liked Tom Amstutz. He has a lot of character traits you don't see often in this day of college football. He played for UT, was a long-time assistant, and while I can't say for sure he had other offers when Toledo was hot, I am sure he would have turned them down to stay home.

Toledo was also one of the original "sling it around" teams, well before it became the rage. They also never met a 4th down he wouldn't go for. Thanks, Toledo Tom, for exciting football and some big wins against the BCS for the MAC.

Montgomery needs to go quickly.

Brandon leaving wouldn't be so bad either. His body of work as HC has always been suspect. In reality, if Amstutz and Montgomery leave, I doubt BG would test the waters the same year.

I would have given Tom one more season after the UM win, of course the Toledo alums opinions are far more important than a rival fans.

That Fresno loss was just a killer...

Adios fat guy, we hardly knew ya.

^ Chipfan is right, at their height, Toledo brought the MAC some great cred in the early 00's.

I heard Brandon commenting on the Amstutz situation on the a local sports radio station on the way home from work tonight and thought the same. BG wouldn't/couldn't gamble on new HC; just not enough fish.

Genyk may be safe. His record at Eastern is not great but he's improved the program. There is no point in Eastern eating his contract.

With the economy in the shape it is in Michigan, eating Genyk's contract would be a horrible PR move by EMU. Of course, that just increases the possibility of it happening.

Genyk has had some bad luck too. If EMU was in the MAC East, they'd be doing much better.

It will be interesting to see who goes for the Toledo job. Is UT looking to hire from within?
