Syria accuses US of helicopter attack on border town.
Sure it was a "civillian building"... full of terrorists

DAMASCUS, Syria (AP) - U.S. military helicopters attacked an area along Syria's border with Iraq Sunday, killing eight people, the Syrian government said.

The Syrian report comes just days after the commander of U.S. forces in western Iraq told reporters that American troops were redoubling efforts to secure the Syrian border, which he said was an "uncontrolled" gateway for fighters entering Iraq.

A government statement carried by the official Syrian Arab News Agency said Sunday's attack was on the Sukkariyeh Farm near the town of Abu Kamal, five miles inside the Syrian border. Four helicopters attacked a civilian building under construction, firing on the workers inside, shortly before sundown, the statement said.

The U.S. military in Baghdad did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The area is near the Iraqi border city of Qaim, which had been a major crossing point for fighters, weapons and money coming into Iraq to fuel the Sunni insurgency.

Iraqi insurgents seized Qaim in April 2005, forcing U.S. Marines to recapture the town the following month in heavy fighting. The area became secure only after Sunni tribes in Anbar turned against al-Qaida in late 2006 and joined forces with the Americans.

On Thursday, U.S. Maj. Gen. John Kelly said Iraq's western borders with Saudi Arabia and Jordan were fairly tight as a result of good policing by security forces in those countries but that Syria was a "different story."

"The Syrian side is, I guess, uncontrolled by their side," Kelly said. "We still have a certain level of foreign fighter movement."

He added that the U.S. was helping construct a sand berm and ditches along the border.

"There hasn't been much, in the way of a physical barrier, along that border for years," Kelly said

You are a little late. I already posted about it. I know you right wingers like hearing about people being killed for elections but it isn't going to work. This last second effort to get Osama after not caring for years is not going to win McCain the election.

You are a total nut job.

To really believe this was election driven is he height of stupidity.

I realize you lost some close friends in those bombings, and I know you're hurting. This is causing you to displace that sorrow onto McCain.

Don't worry. Pretty soon there will be a suicide bombing that will pick your spirits up.

Sorry to disappoint you but I don't talk to Osama or do I know anyone that was killed or injured in the attacks.

Do any of you grasp how looney this assertion is? You truly believe that we're just randomly bombing areas to try and help McCain? Does it ever once enter your mind how patently moronic that thought is?

Like executing an attack on terrorists would do anything for McCain. We've been doing attacks on terrorists for years in exactly the same fashion. This isn't new. This isn't unprecidented.

I'm amazed at just how deep in the Kool Aid you libs are. All logic and reason just depart in favor of Bush hatred and derangement.01-wingedeagle

First of all, let me remind you guys of the political compass test that was posted here some time ago. I believe that I was the most liberal person on this board (OK, not much of an accomplishment, but run with me on this one, alright?). That said, to make the conspiracy theorist assertion that Bush is making strikes in order to scare the populace into voting for McCain is absurd on several levels, not the least of them being that John McCain would not put our military men in harm's way for his political gain, and he would tell Dubya not to do so, as well.

But let's look at this story from another angle: http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2008/oct...ter-attack

So some witnesses saw it, but obviously they don't know why. Thus, it is entirely possible that there were terrorists there, and that our guys were attacking them. Sure, I have a problem with this attack, but that's because I have a problem with the war in Iraq. One thing that we know for certain is that if there were no war in Iraq, this attack and loss of life would not have happened.

HOWEVUH! (as Stephen A. Smith would say) You can't put toothpaste back in the tube (as Mother Teresa would say). Thus, we have to acknowledge that the correct course of action was taken, given the circumstances.

Reading some other accounts, it seems like the raid could be a "Snatch and Grab"... the helicopters landed an assault team that went into the building to capture a specific individual, loaded him in the helicopter and took off back to Iraq.

If it was a raid just "take out the safe house" they could have hit it with Hellfire missiles without landing.

Another option is that they needed 100% to be sure that the specific individual was neutralized, so they put in an assault team for 100% confirmation--take DNA, fingerprints, etc.

It will be interesting to see who the target was.

These guys usually have pretty good sources...

Where are those pesky WMD's Bush has been talking about for 6 years? The troops can't seem to find them.

Glad you believe that but I think McCain wouldn't put our troops in harms way for political gain. I don't. Remember the "bomb Iran" song for political gain? I do. I don't have any doubts he would bomb Iran for political gain.

It wouldn't surprise me if the Repugs tried to pass something like that. They already fix elections so why not eliminate those that actually think and are a threat to their power.
