Obama's only hope to make it to a second term is to propose radical change and then see the Republicans and Moderates in Congress stop it. I don't think the Democrats will control 60 seats in the Senate.

That way he can blame his failures to make "change" on Congress. And the more to the left he goes, the more likely the Democrats will lose congress in 2010.
