Auburn jettisons offensive coordinator Franklin

Apparently Auburn has decided to scrap their offensive coordinator. I seriously doubt Tony Franklin was the problem down there, but he was a convenient scapegoat for Auburn's offensive futility (again).

I wonder what they'll do now? 05-stirthepot

That offense hummed when he was running it at Troy. My guess is that the personnel he had to work with just wasn't comfortable with it. He'll land somewhere.

Yep. Auburn fans are thrilled by this. I think they'll be sorry in the long run. A spread offense isn't something you pick up overnight, like the power running game they prefer down there. I wish 'em luck. They're going to need it...

Auburn did NOt have the players suited to run the spread. Its like Michigan trying to run it this year. It will take years to recruit players to run it efffectively. Auburn fans were not going to give him time.
This is bad news for WV, because it means they will be returning to the running style and drop back passes.

B-b-b-b-ut I thought you couldn't fire coaches mid-season! Somebody pull TGD off the field hockey pitch and show him this.

RE: Auburn jettisons offensive coordinator Franklin
From some of the ESPN blog articles over the past day, it appears that Franklin might have crossed the boss one too many times

1) It is rumored that Franklin and Tuberville disagreed on which QB should be running the offense
2) Supposedly Franklin was very candid about how he felt the offense should run and it sounds like other coaches, including Tuberville, did not agree

And Tuberville has said that they are not ditching the spread offense, just kicking Franklin to the curb.

But its an assistant not a HC. Its rare even when assistants get shown the door in college football during a season. Stripped of playcalling, shifted responsibilities, etc., those things happen and usually leads to an assistant finding a new job in the offseason. But to ditch a coordinator during the year tells me that there was a personality issue.

RE: Auburn jettisons offensive coordinator Franklin
He was a scapegoat, plain and simple. Tuberville is feeling the heat. His offense has always sucked. And now, rather than try to continue their implementation of a true change, he fires Franklin. Smart move, Tommy...

It won't make a difference. Tuberville made it so impossible for Franklin to succeed. If there was a QB dispute, then he should have listened to Franklin. The QB is the key to the spread offense. If the wrong man is at the controls, the offense won't work. And Tuberville insisted the wrong man be at the controls. Auburn needs a QB, and right now they don't have one...
