Memphis analysis and prediction
Memphis has a 2-3 record with one of their wins over a team about as good as Alabama State. They are more experienced and a little more talented on defense, but it looks like we are about even in our potential considering this is a home game for us.
Here is a summary of their season thus far. All of their 3 losses are to solid teams.
24 – 41 Loss to OLE MISS (who has a good win over Florida)
35-42 Loss to RICE (who scored 77 in a win over North Texas)
16-17 Loss to MARSHALL (who has a good win over Southern Miss and big losses to Wisconsin and West Va.)
31-10 Win over NICHOLLS STATE (who doesn’t tell us much)
29-17 Win over ARKANSAS STATE (who pushed Arkansas to the limit and romped North Texas…like Rice)
The Memphis offense averages 190 yards rushing and 277 yards passing. The running game looked good against Arkansas State.
The Memphis defense averages giving up 160 yards rushing and 196 yards passing. They have a very good defensive tackle who terrorized Arkansas State.
Defensive keys to this game are to shut down their running game and pressure their quarterback (big surprise).
They are going to complete a lot of passes to those tall, strong wide receivers against our short secondary – but if we pressure then we will disrupt consistency. Yardage doesn’t hurt you. Consistent yardage is what scores points.
Offensive keys to this game are to establish the running backs (is Johns going to play??) and for Webb or Bivens to manage the game and minimize turnovers. It might actually be good for our offense to have a game where Webb is not fully mobile, to force us to look to establish the running backs for a ground game. Memphis has a decent defense, but they are no South Carolina or Tennessee. They gave up 42 to Rice and 41 to Ole Miss.
We will need a big play on special teams, and will need to prevent Memphis from having one.
If Frantrell can make a big play, and if the defense can build on their effort against South Carolina (especially what they did in the 4th quarter) and if we can finally establish a running back, then we have a good chance of a home win. Lot of IFs, but all possible.
Tuner, Happe and Henderson need 4 sacks between them. Turner showed us what he has last week, but they will probably double on him this week. This needs to be D.J. Reese’s game to make his mark on this conference - and hopefully Barnes also.
I predict a final score of 35 - 31, UAB winning it with a late fourth quarter TD catch by Anderson. Frantrell Forrest has a big game, and Justin Brooks has 102 yards on 19 carries (if Johns doesn't play). Joe Happe, D.J. Reese and Katrell Waters have their best defensive games yet.
The Bones come back to Birmingham and stay for a long time.

Arkansas State is MUCH better than Alabama State, or put more simply, ASU>ASU.

When he said "one of their wins over a team about as good as Alabama State," I'm pretty sure he meant Nicholls State, not ASU.
