I followed mostly pro football, not college. I was a closet Lamar and Longhorn fan. When I moved here and saw all those UT hats & shirts I never realized how many Texas fans there were in this area. Someone told me they were volunteers and I asked for what?
Never heard of the bear before I moved here. I thought the bear was that monkey on that tv show "BJ and the Bear". No 01-scout I really did. I followed pro ball.
Good show BTW with some great music. True story.

I grew up an Alabama football fan. Didn't really follow basketball. When Gene Bartow came to town, I became a UAB fan. Still rooted for Bama in football, but Bama fan after Bama fan condemned me telling me you are not a true fan unless you cheer for a school in all sports. You can't be a "part time" fan.

On March 18, 1993 I realized they were right, when I saw how the Bama fans were treating the UAB fans. It has only gotten worse since UAB started playing football. You are not a true fan of either school unless you support the school 100% in all sports.

I am a UAB in all sports 100%. 100% means that there is no room in my heart for any other school. Therefore, I do not say that I love UAB "but also like" some other school. There is no room.

Just because you did something as a child doesn't mean you should still do it. I used to eat baby food and wear a diaper. I grew out of it.

I went to (but didn't graduate from) Alabama. Upon returning from four years in the Army overseas (and a little skirmish in the desert). I resumed my matriculation at UAB, finally graduating in '95.

Just about from birth I was an Alabama fan.

I probably could have been both a UAB AND Alabama fan until...

ALABAMA AND THEIR FANS SUDDENLY HAD A PROBLEM WITH US.

WTF IS THAT, ANYWAY?

Out of the blue, we were attacked by the BOT, we were marginalized and ridiculed by the Bammar controlled media, and then the masses (of UAT fans) following instructions from said media started hating on us like we were Aubies' love child or something.

So the way I see it, here we are:

We just wanted to play some football at Division I and suddenly these a$$holes start $hitting all over us like we kicked their dog.

We didn't say word one to these people... WTH?...

That, dragonbreath, is why most of us here hate the bastards.

I sincerely hope Tubby has another thumb for them this year. Nothing would be more hilarious than to topple the fatheads right when they are at the apex of their delirium.

Nice post, MB. You were typing as I was and saying essentially the same thing.

RE: Is there even a place to....
Honestly, I was born here in Birmingham in 77 and wasn't even in to college football really until I was in my early 20's. In the last decade, my friends turned me on to Auburn football. Those same fans are the ones that got me going to UAB basketball games. Call me a wagon-jumper all you want, but I've been a fan and gone to almost every home game since. On my own I have really tried to get in to UAB football. But unfortunately, there's been nothing to get excited over. Sorry, but I like watching exciting football. And I don't like being disappointed week after week. And since I only started watching UAB football in the last few years of Brown's tenure, you should understand me being turned off.

Don't get me wrong. I want UAB to win every game they play in every sport. And I kind of follow UAB football. I just can't be as apologetic as some of you can.

RE: Is there even a place to....
I grew up in Atlanta. When I was a kid the UGA fans were asshats so I pulled for Georgia Tech, partly to be contrary and piss'em off and partly because they were the team from Atlanta with strong academics. (You can tell I didn't get how to enjoy big time college football right from the start. 03-razz ) At that time there was one thing you could count on as a GT fan - Alabama and Notre Dame would kick hell out of GT and be unbearably smug about it. I came to hate them both.

I went to Georgia State in Atlanta out of high school. They functionally didn't have sports. I came through Birmingham for a year or so in the late 70's and saw the full bore craziness as the Bahr was still at UA. Still hated the bastids, and had more cause because I had to put up with their pinhead fans.

Moved to Houston and went to University of Houston. I was there for Phi Slamma Jamma and the Jack Pardee run 'n shoot. Fun times. I'm still a closet Coog fan anytime they're not playing us... although I don't have much use for Tumbledown Tom Penders, who is not fit to wash Guy Lewis' towel.

My wife and I came back to Birmingham when she got her job at UAB nineteen years ago. I've been around UAB athletics ever since, to varying degrees. She got into football here before I did really - she worked the gates very early on, season one or two, and we've had season tickets ever since we moved up to D1.

I've seen good times and bad. I remember the high water mark (the TCU game on ESPN Thursday night when D Hack lit them up in front of 38,000) and the lows (I was in my seat the entire USF monsoon game, the 22 second SMU debacle, most of the past two seasons).

I truly believe that we've hired a coach that can take us to respectability. We need time to develop but the foundation is built and CNC is laying bricks building UAB's future success. You can accuse me of drinking the koolaid if you wish but I've been to a lot of practices and games and I really like what I'm seeing built here.

I don't hate the bammers, but I have little respect for them and no use for the "Wooo Bama ROOOOL TAHD!!!" I'm going to have inflicted on me this week. I hope they take a senseless loss or two soon and that Auburn corncobs them hard come the Iron Bowl.

There has always been a question I have always wanted to ask Blazer fans who are in their 30's upward. Before UAB fielded a football team? Who did you follow football wise in college football? Don't say you didn't have a favorite team until UAB football came along. I grew up a Bama fan from attending my first Bama game in 1975. But, people kill me when they were big Auburn or Alabama fans attending games at Legion Field, then when UAB fields a team.... they hate the teams they pulled for when they were a kid growing or later all of a sudden.
Funny stuff.

I was born and raised an Auburn fan. My Dad played baseball at Auburn and I grew up going to ganmes when Auburn had to play second fiddle to tha Bahr. When UAB started athletics (specifically basketball) my family bought season tix and I supported the Blazers because they were my local team, they were the "underdog" and they were exciting. When I chose a college, I chose UAB and never second guessed my decision. I became a UAB fan and when footbal came along I decided to give my heart to the Blazers.

I also remember that when UAB was in its division I infancy, it was Auburn that gave us a game. Plus, I have spent my entire life pulling for ANYONE who plays against UAT. As the saying goes, I would root for the Al Queda Allstars against Satan's...I mean Saban's team.

RE: Is there even a place to....
My dad and I have had season tickets for basketball since year two. Before football, I went to many uat games, but never really rooted for them. My dad had been born, raised and schooled in Iowa. I really began hating them the day I got arrested at an Al/AU game. I was standing by the fence on the uat side when AU scored. It tied the score and I began clapping. All of a sudden, I got blind sided by a right. The next thing I know, a cop was pulling me up. I turned around to find out who hit me and a group of uat guys said that I had swung at one of them. BTW, I weighed 120lbs (not exactly big enough to start trouble with frat guys. Well, the cop decided to escort me out and do nothing to the other guy. When we reached underneath the stadium, he slapped cuffs on me.

Years later, while on the UAB tennis team, I couldn't wait to beat my opponent's arse. The bad news was that I was injured and couldn't play. Justice was served, however, when we beat their arses in the NIT. I drove all the way from Blacksburg, Va. for the game.

I know it's going to be tough for me. My job keeps me in law firms and doctors offices everyday. I'm not going to be able to escape it.

This is one of the benefits of living outside of the United States. I haven't seen those fans since January 5th of this year. You can't drink the water but you don't have to put up with bamah fans.

I'd rather have bad water than Bama fans.
