CatsClaw Wrote:That's the difference between C-USA Cincinnati and Big East Cincinnati. Depth. Our skills positions are a little bit better, but they have always been good. The Big East allows Cincinnati to compete at a higher level. Look, if the non-BCS want to say they have caught up with the BCS that's fine. Then you can't complain and say that the BCS puts you at a disadvantage recruiting wise.
I've always said the BCS is nothing more than a vehicle for maintaining the status quo. I stand by that... :muttering:

I agree. They could easily set up a playoff system. And if they want to maintain segments of the BCS, then the Big Six champions would be guaranteed a berth in the BCS playoffs, there would be room for at-large BCS member to qualify, and one or two non-BCS teams would be guaranteed a berth.

It'll happen eventually. Public opinion is moving the NCAA toward it like a glacier to the sea. It may be slow. But it's unstoppable.

& Big East schools don't lose their coaches either I suppose?

the effect of the the 85 scholarship limit is starting to result in more parody in college football. a lot of NON-BCS teams have good skill guys....4.4 WR's and running backs. quality QB's. the main difference is depth.....especially in the D-line and O-line. also, speed and quickness along the lines.

RE: Has the NonBCS conference's caught up
The bigger schools setting impossible standards for their coaches has allowed a lot of fresh new coaches a shot at a job too. They keep snatching up the better coaches from the lesser BCS programs. The lesser BCS programs snatch coaches from further down the ladder, or promote from within, which is rarely done at the highest level (God forbid somebody should stick their neck out and actually take a chance). So coaches climb to the top, where a few manage to remain. Then they either tumble down to their level of competence, or end up on TV.

That means the bottom rung either hires someone nobody else wants, or they give new, unproven coaches their first chance. Sometimes it pays off big. But it's a hit or miss proposition. I guess a good anology for the coaching carousel would be that it's like a river, which leads to a waterfall. Only a lucky few manage to grab a boulder before going over the edge, and new victims are thrown into the river every season.

That's life as we know it, folks. You can either live with it, or start b!tch!ng... 07-coffee3

The non bcs have not and will not catch up.. has the divide been made smaller.. yes.. mostly because of the 86 schollie rule.. big schools cant lock up 100 plus kids any more.. but $$$ and BCS tag matter.

RE: Has the NonBCS conference's caught up
I think the nonBCS squads will have every year a few teams that can compete with the BCS boys in a one or two game setting but they lack the depth to do it consistently.
The BCS tag has divided football into two tiers and is not only talent but also fan support that separates the two. While there are some nonBCS teams like BYU and ECU that haave very good support the rest of them dont have it and thus makes it more difficult to keep good coaches and bring in good talent yearly.
Those leagues also have dead weight that hurts them in the long run.

RE: Has the NonBCS conference's caught up
MWC has caught the Big East this year on the field. MWC looks in better shape for bowls. Those that argue that the MWC bottom is weaken than the Big East....think again....UNLV beat a ranked PAc Ten team while San Diego State played Notre Dame tough in South Bend. Utah beat Michigan. BYU 59-0 over UCLA shows they can stackup pretty well at the top too. Syracuse, Pitt, Rutgers each have home losses to non-BCS schools. USF and UConn with OT wins on the road against non-bcs schools. West Virginia with a blowout loss at ECU. Big East has the financial advantage over the non-bcs which is enormous. Big East is centered near east coast media and South Florida has become a big time player on the national scene while Miami-Fl and Florida State have fallen behind USF. Big East will be strong, but a couple disasterous coaching hires by Syracuse and Pitt have hurt the conference's preception in football. As good as South Florida helped the Big East, millions had to watch that Penn State-Syracuse game....atleast ABC switch to a better game in the second half.

The Mountain West was formed in response to the BCS by BYU who realized that the WAC-16 was forever going to have too much dead weight.

IMO, they seriously have a shot at joining the BCS.

But not at the BE's expense, I hope you're not one of those who are forever pining for the BE's BCS slot. Remember, the BCS rules call for no fewer than 5 BCS conferences, BUT no more than 7. There are currently 6...

The MWC isn't as close to getting a bid as the WAC is. Remember the Big East rule? All they have to do is continue their level of success and they'll get in. The average ranking of their champion is close to what is needed now, and they've had a representative in BCS bowl games 3 of the last 4 years.

The MWC still has a long way to go by comparison... 07-coffee3

There are other criteria as well Bit. Their conference average is drug way down by having Utah State in the conference. They also usually have only 1 conference member in the top 25, another criteria. The MWC could get in before the WAC because their bottom is better than the WAC's.

This week there are 4 teams from Non AQ conferences among the AP top 25. Does anyone know what the most has ever been in a given week? I don't remember there ever being more than 4, but my memory isn't that good anymore either.

The final poll in 2003 had five non-AQ teams
14. Miami (OH)
18. Boise St.
21. Utah
23. Bowling Green
25. TCU

Northern Illinois also finished 10-2 that year and ended up unranked because they didn't win a division in the MAC and did not go to a bowl. NIU started that 7-0 including wins vs. Maryland, Alabama and Iowa St.

2004's final poll also had four: Utah (4), Louisville (6), Boise St. (12) and Navy (24). During that year, there was also five in the top 25 for the 10/31 poll: Utah (7), Louisville (14), Boise St. (16), Southern Miss (21) and UTEP (25).

You don't think we're dragged down by the futility of Syracuse. We booted out Temple, so the Orange could take their place? The BEast is primarily viewed as WVU, USF, and some also rans, one of whom is among the worst teams in college football. Pitt keeps getting mention, but falls far short of expectations. That will continue as long as 'Dave's not here, man.'

Having Wannstedt at Pitt doesn't do our cause any good. Having Syracuse does us even less right now... 03-banghead

What really does need to happen though is one of the WAC or MWC need to take some initiative and assemble a conference like this:

Utah
TCU
BYU
Boise State
Fresno State
Nevada
San Jose State
San Diego State
UNLV
New Mexico

Maybe replace one of the last 4 with Hawaii if they decide its feasable to travel out there. Im not 100% on the basketball of some of these schools, or the fan support, so maybe make some adjustments based on that, but at the very least the top 5 in that conference and whoever else they see fit would make it worthy of a BCS autobid.

Doing that should end most of the bcs buster crap as it would then take something pheonominal to break into the bcs. Any other school that emerged as great would be able to be picked up by either the big east or this new western conference.

-- Agreed....I would even go as far as to say if the MWC conference added Fresno, Boise and Houston they should get strong BCS consideration
