If you are serious, I would recommend a 12 guage pump with the shortest legal barrel you can get. That combination is probably among the best self defense weapons available. Makes a very distinctive sound when you chamber a round. Winchester 870 is good reliable model.
As far as Benelli's go, my son has an automatic and loves it. He uses it for duck, turkey and dove. I have an 870 pump that I use for duck hunting. As you probably know, it can get rather dirty and muddy going to and in the blind. I can use my gun for a walking stick if I need to and it won't hurt it. Wouldn't feel good about using an expensive gun that way.

Depending on the length of your wifes arms she may not deal with the pull of a full size stock well. You can get a youth model in both the rem 870 or moss 500 that with an 18" barrel may work better.
