Who can forget the parties and drinkfests at The Schlitz Belle? My mind was pretty much a blur as to what happened at those parties except for the giant beer cup pyramids we made! (You gotta' remember this was before Beer Pong was invented!)

Quote:Milwaukee's famous Schlitz returns, taps into nostalgia
Former top-selling beer lures new fans with original recipe

By EMILY FREDRIX • Associated Press • August 4, 2008

MILWAUKEE — It's the beer that made Milwaukee famous. Now Schlitz is making the city nostalgic.

That beer with the old-time mystique is back on shelves in bottles of its original formula in the city where it was first brewed more than a century and a half ago.

Schlitz was the top-selling beer for much of the first half of the 20th century. But recipe changes and a series of problems made the beer — in many a drinker's opinion — undrinkable, turning what was once the world's most popular brew into little more than a joke.

But after decades of dormancy, the beer is back.

Schlitz's owner, Pabst Brewing Co., is recreating the old formula, using notes and interviews with old brew masters to concoct the pilsner again. The maker of another nostalgic favorite, Pabst Blue Ribbon, it hopes baby boomers will reach for the drink of their youth, otherwise known as "The Beer That Made Milwaukee Famous." They also want to create a following among younger drinkers who want to know what grandma and grandpa drank.

Schlitz has a Tennessee connection, having been made at a brewery that opened in Memphis in 1972.

03-hissyfit 03-weeping Doesn't look like it will be available in Tennessee anytime, soon.

I read the article the other day showing the guy with his collection of Schlitz bottles. Before the change I has several construction contracts at the plant here in Memphis. Pretty cool place to see in operation.

They also started selling one of my favorite cheaper brews here the other day. Pabst Blue Ribbon Light. I always bought it when on canoe trips up in the Ozarks (pass over state line to MO where they sold it) but now I can drink it here and get the feeling of being in a canoe........well after putting down a few of them.
The schlitz plant must have been a wild place to work. Supposedly they didn't even care if you sipped the stuff during the day while working. I don't think OSHA would allow for that now. lol

A friend of mine worked at the Coors plant, what was once the Schlitz plant, and if I am remembering correctly they were allowed one or two beers a day and could take home a case every Friday. Pretty cool...

The very first time I got drunk when I was about 15 was from drinking 2 quarts of Schlitz. I was sick for three days.

they had a free "happy hour" at the belle everyday after work, for several different shifts....i'm sure more than a few folks popped in when it wasn't their quitting time. 04-cheers

Scooties has the Pabst line.

I had a friend of mine told me the other day
"I found this new beer called Pabst Blue Ribbon."

My reply...

Kroger at Gtown/Trinity. My brother in law works for one of the distributors and talks with the other guys while putting out stock and one of them said they had PBRL in the warehouse getting ready to roll out. I didn't believe him and after waiting almost a month I had almost given up. Saw it yesterday and bought a 12 pack.

At least I progressed beyond the Boone's Farm labels...

We used to buy Stag when we couldn't scrape up enough change to buy Schlitz, it wasn't half bad!

Man, those were the days, a dollar sure went a long way back then.
