That's not the best location for a student residence hall...there are some "shady" homeless folks around 1st Ave. South
It will be a much better place in time. Things will really start changing around 1st Ave South and North over the next couple years. UAB is more likely to expand towards Midtown than towards the Southside neighborhoods.

I love historic homes, my home is 99 years old and has the original staircase, hardwood floors, cabinetry, fireplace mantle, etc. At the same time, I have all the modern safety devices and the gas lines have been replaced. It's not cheap to restore historic homes to modern safety standards, but it should definitely be considered before demolition.
You have to remember that this isn't Mobile. These homes aren't antebellum and southern belles didn't glide down the stair cases to visit men calling on them. This area was used for the steel industry. Most of these places are coated with inches of grime from years of pollution resulting from the steel mills. I can appreciate history but I know crap when I see it and these homes are the definition of it.

I saw somebody on here with a post a few months ago that called UAB the University that Ate Birmingham. I believe that is the case. How many city blocks are we now? Last I heard it was 78 city blocks and that was March of '04 during my UAB tour.

That would be me. My wife (a 16 year UAB employee) and I have laughingly used that acronym for years. I sometimes wonder if Joe Sixpack of Birmingham ever realizes quite how important this university is to his quality of life.

I think people realize it, but give the "UA" in UAB the credit.

Nope! UA actually had little to do with building UAB. UAB is almost entirely a self built entity that has faced an uphill battle, both academically and athletically, from the UAT Board of (Mis)trustees.
My first year at UAB was 1980, and since that time, UAB's patrons have been Birmingham businesses and federal funding. Very little has ever been received from UAT. Matter of fact, a great deal of UAB overall income now goes to support UAT. They just can't take care of themselves, which is why there will never be a separation, no matter how badly some of us want to be The University of Birmingham.

I think it's around 82 blocks, but not positive.
