RE: SU sends another starter packing
I didn't realize that Williams wasn't playing in the fall either. That opening game with Northwestern keeps looking harder and harder. At least SU won't have to look hard for their next head coach, because he's just a few miles away. I was shocked the Orange didn't take Turner Gill from Buffalo last year when it became clear he wasn't going back to Nebraska

I don't think it will be Turner Gill when Cuse makes a change if they make a change. From what I read he is doing a superb job at Buffalo but he has just turned the program around. I think he needs to put it on top of the MAC and keep it there a few years before he gets his big break in the top BCS 6 programs. Not knocking him but I do think he has to put Buffalo on top before he gets his big break. By the way I am a Nebraska fan too so I hope he gets that break.

I wouldn't be too sure Gill is automatic. I think Golden would get some consideration, as well as Browning if he can turn the offense around this year.
But my sleeper is Locksley from Illinois. Gross tends to hire coaches with professional coaching experience or 'hot' up-and-coming assistant coaches/coordinators with a track record for getting recruits.
Cheers,
Neil

Question will be....will Gross even be around when its time to hire another Football Coach? (especially since his choice for a football coach has turned out so well.)

Golden, you don't want Golden, he hasn't done nothing yet.

Yep, but keep in mind his first recommendation to Garrett at USC was Hackett. But he seemed to rebound pretty well with his second recommendation. A guy named Pete Carroll.
And yes, he was the front man in both hires, thanks to his New York Jets connections. Carroll was the one who recommended Robinson to him for the Syracuse hire.
Gross was also instrumental in getting Floyd to take the USC basketball job (his last act at USC). A year or two earlier, he tried to get Cheryl Miller to return to coaching the women's bb squad (she had coached them to a 44-14 record in two years there in the mid-90s), but when she finally decided not to (still citing the fatigue factor that coaching causes her) he stole Mark Trakh from Pepperdine where he had built a perennial NCAA tournament team.
And the rest of his Syracuse hires have worked out well so far in terms of the early returns - most notably Quentin Hillsman for women's bb and Gary Gait for women's lacrosse.
I seriously doubt TGD is in any jeopardy of losing his job over coaching hires. He might lose it one day over "loose lips", but not coaching hires.
Cheers,
Neil

I didn't say "I wanted him".
But I'm kind of hoping Temple cans him after this year. That would open up the possibility of Mike Locksley (if he were to get the job) of hiring him as Associate Head Coach/Defensive Coordinator.
The two together would make quite a recruiting pair - Locksley with his Maryland, Virginia and Florida connections and Golden with his Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Virginia connections.
Cheers,
Neil

A not-so-subtle backhanded jab to continue your "point" from yesterday, I see. Well, if you think dismissing players over grades proves some sort of point that SU has higher academic standards than UC, then your case is weak.
Last season, UC suspended both Derrick Stewart and Curtis Young (both key players) because they weren't cutting it in the classroom. I'm sure you remember who Stewart is:
http://gobearcats.cstv.com/sports/m-foot...06aaa.html
As it stands now, only Young has a chance of making it back.
IF SU REALLY wants to prove they have standards, they'll get rid of that guy who's pretending to be a football coach

Be proud of those standards...what happens on the field is less important than what happens in the classroom anyways.
Maybe I should have gone to SU.

Golden has to have his eyes set on PennSt, hopefully PennSt makes there move before Golden ready. They say Schiona might be intrested in PennSt, Golden might be eyeing up Rutgers also. Temple best bet is Golden holds out for either serino & it takes awhile to devolp. buy this time he has Temple on solid ground.

Agree. It's a domino effect. Schiano takes the PSU job, Golden likely a high candidate to replace Schiano. If, however, Schiano were not to get the PSU job, I highly doubt Golden gets it, barring some miracle season by the Owls.

Are you being serious? If not, ignore everything below.
If so, Maybe you should go over to their boards and root for them. After all, I think it was you who just last year instructed UC people to go root for WVU at every mention of Huggins.

Golden is in the same boat as Gill. He needs to finish the job at Temple before he moves on to a BCS school. He has turned Temple around but doesn't even have a winning record yet. He needs to move Temple to the top of the MAC just like Gill need s to move Buffalo to the top first and stay there too while they are being evaluated for the next level as a head coach.

Golden to PSU? I must have missed something what has he done at Temple?
He won FOUR games last year, all four teams had losing records. Temple playing in the MAC should lead to better records but the fans at PSU would burn Beaver stadim down if that was anounced.
He might be a good coach but he hasnt accomplished anything at Temple yet.

I'd be more worried about PSU if I were a RU fan, than a TU fan.

I don't think Schiano will go to Penn State. He has the opportunity to do in New Jersey what the Lions did in State College. Following a legend is a no-win situation. At Rutgers, Schiano IS the legend.
The only other story of note in Rutgers football history is playing in the first college football game, and that was over a hundred years ago.

Neil, what level of success do you think Robinson has to reach in order to save his job? Does he just need to be more competitive or actually get to 6-6 and the International Bowl?

I don't think it necessarily has to be 6-6, if let's say hypothetically it is 5-7 or 4-8 with close losses to West Virginia, South Florida, and Penn State that might be enough. However, 4-8 with blowout losses to those same three teams is likely not to be considered "significant" improvement.
Remember, Syracuse doesn't have a "quick" trigger on coaching fires. They tend to want to keep the coaches they hire around a long time.
Cheers,
Neil
