OT - Georgia's mascot, Uga VI dead @ age 9
Uga VI, Georgia's mascot, dead from congestive heart failure

I wonder if this will affect the football team's performance. I doubt it. But I can hope.

I know all Georgia fans love Uga, no matter the nomenclature. Those dogs are so ugly, they're cute too. Georgia can't start this season without a mascot, either. It won't be long before he's replaced. I imagine they'll announce Uga's successor soon, although they could save it for the opening game - if they want to be dramatic and make a production out of it.

Uga VII coming up...

The Uga-lineage goes back to 1956. All of the Ugas have been owned by the Seiler family of Savannah.

At the HQ of the State Bar of Georgia in downtown Atlanta, there is a wall with the portraits of all the SBG presidents going back over 100 years. A lot of stern, somber expressions, especially in the late 19th and early-to-mid 20th Century. The you come to Sonny Seiler-- president in 1973-- and he is shown grinning ear to ear with one of the Ugas at his side.

The whole Uga-thing is extremely important to a lot of people in this state.

I know. I've been in Knoxville for 14 years now, and have spent a good bit of time going back and forth to Athens. I used to have a friend who was a UGA alum with box seats. I'd go down for Vols games, and enjoy his hospitality.

It's a pity he's dead. He passed away just before Georgia destroyed Hawai'i. 03-banghead

Hadn't heard about that. Thanks for posting.

The average age for dogs is 16, I think. Although I had a boxer as a kid that lived to be 23. Riggie was pretty feeble after 21, but he hung on for quite a while.

Depends on the breed. My dogs have anywhere from a 9-12 year lifespan. Great Danes also have a very short lifespan, around 10 years.

MEMPHIS is the only school besides LSU with a live Tiger mascot. We currently have "TOM II" ("TOM" stands for "Tigers of Memphis"). TOM I was adopted as a cub in 1973.

So? The Colorado buffalo, Ralphie, would trample either Tiger. Now there is a dangerous animal when it goes on a rampage.

There's been a few Bevo's too, the steer mascot of the Texas Longhorns.
