Not good for Georgetown. Used to be a top 45-55 in these polls, but no more.

RE: 2008 Director's Cup - Final Standings
Big East breakdown for top 100 looks good decent in raw numbers with 8 teams, but percentage wise it is way behind the other 5 "power conferences". 8 of 16 is not too good, but you would be 6 of 8 top 100 with only the football schools.

RE: 2008 Director's Cup - Final Standings
What a rough showing for the Bearcats. 66 teams with BCS access, and 63 make the top 100.
109. Mississippi St
126. Rutgers
164. Cincinnati
They are behind such heavyweights as Cleveland St, Montana St, Binghamton, Iona, Vermont, Oakland (MI), and MEAC school Maryland Eastern Shore. A good portion of MES's $3.8 mil yearly budget is spent on bubble gum to hold the team greyhound together and on buying used uniforms from thrift stores. How in the world do they finish above UC?
Cincy got points for football and men's swimming. They certainly have good facilities for many sports now. Is it a lack of coaching or a lack of talent with most other sports?

The sign of a healthy, and strong athletic department is strength across the spectrum of sports. Schools who have more to offer tend to have an easier time getting the best recruits.

I see my school is ahead of a lot of BCS schools. Too bad we aren't worthy. I also see that C-USA did better than all other non-auto-bid conferences.

What’s the basis of this poll? It appears to be a joke. As far as I can tell, there is only one sport in which UC is far and away gawd awful. That would be lacrosse, which they just started.

In the 3 "big" sports UC did just fine. Football, basketball, and baseball. I'm not worried about this stupid cup, personally. Last I checked the main stream media doesn't give a crap about it either.

I think they should weight sports, instead of having all count eqally across the board. Who cares if USC won a national championship in ballet, crochet, or some other 'et?

Even the two major women’s sports: Volleyball is solid. Basketball wasn’t too great, but not like the worst in the country.

It's actually the Sears Directors Cup. Here's a link that explains how points are tabulated.

I agree, but on what basis? Numbers of scholarships allowed? That would make baseball more important than basketball. National average attendance figures? Tough to agree on.

How about by % income generated. That ought to solve matters.

Actually, men's basketball allows more scholarships than baseball. All you get for baseball are your starting 9, an alternate starting pitcher, and 1.7 relievers (baseball allows partial scholarships). If your ace pitcher gets injured, good luck. Men's soccer is even worse off: 11 players on the field, but only 9.9 scholarships. A simple solution would be to shift a couple of the 85 scholarships used by football to other men's sports, but the screams and cries of the BCS conferences would echo through the night. They're not letting the non-BCS members close the gap any further. What they'll tell you though is that they need a full scholarship 4th string fullback to maintain the quality of play in college football. Much more important than baseball having a 4th pitcher, obviously.
As for the idea of a "weighted" Director's Cup: football and basketball already have trophies. Is a combined football/basketball trophy really necessary? The Director's Cup combines all NCAA sponsored sports, men's and women's. There is no competitive ballet or basket-weaving in the NCAA. The only goofy sport included in the standings is Women's Bowling, which only exists because they ran out of legitimate women's sports to counterbalance the 85 football scholarships. The Director's Cup only awards points for postseason play, and only in official NCAA tournaments (no points for winning the NIT). That means that it's better to finish 20th in basketball and be the worst team in the NCAA in every other sport than it is to just barely miss the tournament in every single sport. It also means that football and basketball do get slightly more weight, because their postseason tournaments/bowls are larger than the tournaments of other sports. Lastly, for conferences that get only 1 bid to the postseason tournaments, it's obviously very hard to score points, whereas it's a bit of a self-fulfilling prophecy that the conferences which get the majority of the at large bids will flood the standings. BYU is the highest ranked non-BCS school mainly because they win their conference in nearly everything and get all the postseason bids.
