NTR-George Carlin dead at 71
Never thought he was all that funny, but I didn't see him til 20 years after his best stuff was already part of cultural lexicon

He was very funny, took a bit of getting used to him, he was different.

No Pope considering the subject

Right -- I guess that makes Richard Pryor the new 'Most Unfunny Guy Alive.' (Pryor is alive - right?)

If you want some one to just tell you jokes, Carlin and Pryor weren't for you. They were much more than just stand-up comedians.

No, he died a couple years ago.

Sorry, just scanned the first page.

Most comics are funniest when their stuff is fresh. Since Carlin's stuff had been rehashed ten times over when I saw it, it was old hat.

Comedians are like musicians. When entertaining their loyal fans they know that we are all waiting for our favorite songs or jokes.

He was a genius, and I enjoyed his outlook on life, government/politics and his personal views of religion. I go way back to the hippie dippie weatherman album with him.

I had already decided this, and then read where George Carlin said it, I think Lewis Black is the new George Carlin. He is hilarious.

Since there isn't a "Joke of the Day" Forum, I suggest we rename "The People's Forum" to the "George Carlin Forum" because "The People's Forum" has become a real joke lately.

RE: NTR-George Carlin dead at 71
i just finished lewis blacks latest book "me of little faith". carlin wrote a nice back cover piece for him

Black's forward to the book

Quote:What am I doing putting my two cents in about religion?

Because I think it’s taken too seriously, and anything that takes itself too seriously is open to ridicule.

But when you write about people's beliefs, you are asking for it. Every page in this book has the potential to offend someone, somewhere, in perpetuity, throughout the universe. That doesn't even count the critics who will say it’s not funny enough. Or serious enough. Or spiritual enough.

Religion, funny? You've got to be kidding. I am kidding, but it's not going to be seen that way by some people, which is why you’ve got to keep poking fun at it. After millennia of religion being used as a club, someone’s got to search for organized religion's funny bone.

To put it as simply as I can: This is a book about my relationship to religion, where my—dare I say it?—spiritual journey has taken me. From the religious dead-ends I have wandered into the pinpricks of light I have seen and barely understood, it’s all here, in its complicated and infuriating glory.

And all of this is just my opinion, the way I look at religion, what it's meant and not meant to me. And why it makes me laugh.

So if religion has taken over your life and you don't want to think about it or laugh about it because it will upset you, do me a favor:

Don't read the ******* book. Ever.

And ever. Amen.

George was a fairly unique comedian, in that besides making you laugh, he also made you think. Intelligent comedians are a very rare commodity these days. He will be missed.

+1

I wasn't going to post on this thread but as I read some of your posting it appears to be a wide generational gap.

GC was part of my generation and I still have vinyl album of his recording. To see his passing only reminds me how close we all are to the last curtain call.

GC had some good advise on how to live your life and he also, made you think while laughing.

Which (judging from your Joke of the Day contributions) is something you are incapable of.
