Call me crazy, but I'm of the school of thought that you tier your sports and offer the golf team mostly in-state scholarships (to "save" money), and give basketball and football the larger percentage of out-of-state scholarships (if they need them), and potentially lower your athletic costs that way. ETSU is the exact opposite for some odd reason. I have a feeling our AD doesn't see it my way though.

I've been saying this for a long time. I find it incredible that ETSU would brag on a No. 23 golf ranking with all foreign players vs. a No. 47 ranking by MTSU with local players.

No. 23 vs. No. 47. What is the difference?

What I've been told is that years ago, a President at ETSU thought it would be a great altruistic thing if all the sports were responsible for their own fundraising.

The obvious flaw in this is that the tennis and golf coaches would have more time to fundraise than the football coach would.

And a golf or tennis coach also has the added benefit of being able to go to a wealthy donor and improve his game. Few 50 year old millionaires want to improve their tackling form.

So while individual donations to sports aren't exclusive to ETSU, the structure is.

And yes, this was reinforced when Mullins was named the AD and why most schools have revenue-minded sport athletic directors.

What the new president at ETSU must do is not necessarily just commit to reviving football, but rather revamping the fundraising structure.
