The Reagan Diaries
Just got done reading The Reagan Diaries and I have to say it was a fantastic book. Whether you like or hate Reagan you ought to read this book.

Reagan kept a daily journal all 8 years of his presidency. It really is facinating to read his thoughts on the events that happened throughout his 2 terms. He's one of only 4 presidents to keep a daily journal while in the White House.

Pick it up, it's a great read.

I'm always fascinated by Presidential 'behind the scene" type stuff. Is there any of that fluff?

He talks a lot about what's going on.

Mentions dinners with friends, going to Camp David. Talks about arguments going on behind the scenes. It's a terrific insight into his presidency.

It's really facinating to read what his thoughts were on Iran/Contra. After reading it you really get the idea he didn't know it was going on. And it wasn't because he was disengaged, but because what he had approved was bastardized into Iran/Contra.

What he say about John Hinkley will shock you.

I seem to remember some talk/speculation that Reagan had started suffering the effects of Alzheimers by the end of his second term. Is there any evidence of this in his journal?

You actually see it some. For example in one of his entries he says that his son Ron came over for dinner and they had a good time. Then at the end of the entry he says, "Wait, Ron's coming over tomorrow night."

He also talks about being tired more later in his presidency. He was still in command of himself and his office, it was an occassional thing from the way the diaries read.

RE: The Reagan Diaries
anything about the famous SALT meeting with Gorby after he built up our military, realized SDI was crucial to the Soviets and got up and left the table?

I read one book once on his being shot, said he was convinced that the hand of Providence saved him and he was left on earth to finish the job of defeating the Soviets.

Actually yes. There is a good bit about that in the diaries.

He writes about that as well. It's amazing what he says.

He talks about laying on the table looking up at the ceiling tiles and praying after he was shot. he says that he realized he couldn't ask for help himself while harboring hate for the guy who shot him. He said he started praying for him and that he'd find his way back to God.

Very powerful.

I read once that when the limo got to the hospital, he got up on his own out of the car and walked into hospital unassisted to show he was ok, then collapsed once inside.

it still amazes me we haven't had another POTUS shot since then. Either Secret Service has seriously stepped up their game or the country has calmed down a bit since the 60/70's era and hinkley

I am worried about Obama being assasinated. I was really disappointed in Huckabee talking about aiming at Obama at that NRA meeting.

Yeah, and while he a was a master in terms of comedic ability, it doesn't hold a candle to the humor of Carlos Mencia's version. JMO.
