rferry Wrote:In an earlier version of my post, I considered accounting for other adjustments Memphis' membership in a 17-team league would mean. For example, the present TV contract for basketball would decline 80K for each team. Schools would make $90K from hosting Memphis basketball every other year. However, after that the amounts were small or not-sustainable. The benefit of football gameday revenue was estimated to be small as most existing OOC games are as well attended as conference games. The benefit of added NCAA credits was figured unsustainable as Memphis would merely be taking another BE team's spot most years.

However, you are right that timing is important. If Memphis was invited in time for 2010 (and the Tigers kept up their recent performance until then), then the league would get $18.4 to be paid over the course of the next 6 years. Once spread evenly across the 17-team league, each team would get $180K per year. In a 9-team league, it would mean $340 per year. That's huge. Timing is really important. However, the transferred CUSA credits would dry up after 6 years.
04-05: 1 year of 6 annual payments of $200K for each of the 4 credits = $0.8
05-06: 2/6 of 4cr = $1.6
06-07: 3/6 of 4cr = $2.4
07-08: 4/6 of 6cr = $4.8
08-09: 5/6 of 4cr = $4.0
09-10: 6/6 of 4cr = $4.8

C-USA would keep all of the credits Memphis earned while in C-USA, if Memphis leaves the conference they will leave their earned credits just like Louisville and Cincinnati left their when they left C-USA for the Big East. The point is Memphis has not been a 1 or 2 wonder, they have earned 20 NCAA credits over the last 5 years.
Compare that to Big East Schools:

Memphis- 20

vs

Villanova- 11
Georgetown- 10
Marquette- 4
Notre Dame- 3
Seton Hall- 3
DePaul- 2
Providence- 1
St. John's- 0
Total- 34

Connecticut- 13
Louisville- 12
Pittsburgh- 11
West Virginia- 10
Syracuse- 5
Cincinnati- 4
South Florida- 0
Rutgers- 0
Total- 55

I disagree, there's no way in hell we leave a dime of our money
behind. Cal would play his boy Barbee or Larry E for a few years OOC, and they'd be fortunate to have us.

BTW only Louisville left their final four money behind, and honestly they
could afford to. USF and Cincy kept their shares and played us.

In all honesty I don't know what C-USA 's bylaws are for leaving the conference is, but in the MWC I believe any team leaving would not take a dime. When the MWC schools broke away from the WAC 16, every NCAA credit was left behind with the WAC. After Boise St won the Fiesta Bowl their was much talk on Boise St going to the MWC, if Boise St would have accepted a MWC bid last Spring, they not got a dime of the money they earned in the Fiesta Bowl (roughly lost $4.8 million). Does anyone remember if the exiting schools (Miami, Va Tech, and BC) took anything with them?

UC got their credits after leaving by agreeing to play Memphis and UAB in basketball.
