that's why I don't like to watch the Derby
One of the horses broke both of her front ankles and had to be put down on the track after the race today. There's just something about watching horses run like that (especially that close together) scares me. I'm always afraid one of the horses is going to fall. so so sad......

RE: that's why I don't like to watch the Derby
Yes, that was very sad, but every owner of a racehorse knows the possiblilites. Horses are such beautiful creatures, and to watch them run is a thing of beauty.
I feel very sad for the owners, trainers and rider(s) of the horse that broke it's ankles. It's got to be very painful to raise a race horse, train it, groom it for 2-3 years, then have that horse finish 2nd in the Derby, and 2 minutes later have to be euthanized. To have it go away so quickly has got be very hard to deal with, but they don't want the horse to suffer.
But that Big Brown looks like the real deal. I will be interested to see if maybe this year, we'll have a triple crown winner. It's been almost 30 years since the last one.

It was the horse that finished second. How tragic.
They're beautiful, but fragile creature.
Remember, back in 1975 when Ruffian broke her leg in a one-on-one match race against Derby winner Foolish Pleasure? She hit her shoulder going out of the starting gate, ran full speed while favoring a leg, fractured it had to be put down.
It's the dark side of horse racing.

They love the status symbol of owning a $5,000,000 horse and running in the Derby.
The owner of the horse that was put down probably still received few hundred grand for runner-up and an insurance pay-out. I was surprised that the horse was put-down so soon.
I too hope for a Tripe Crown winner. It will be a great season

I couldn't stand watching it. My wife and I love horses. We had two (quarter horse, Tenn-Walker) and after the Barbaro tragedy we've had a hard time getting ourselves to watch these races. Now this. Just awful.
